In Wyoming for a medical conference, Boston medical examiner Maura Isles joins a group of friends on a spur-of-the-moment ski trip. But when their SUV stalls on a snow-choked mountain road, they’re stranded with no help in sight.
As night falls, the group seeks refuge from the blizzard in the remote village of Kingdom Come, where twelve eerily identical houses stand dark and abandoned. Something terrible has happened in Kingdom Come: Meals sit untouched on tables, cars are still parked in garages. The town’s previous residents seem to have vanished into thin air, but footprints in the snow betray the presence of someone who still lurks in the cold darkness—someone who is watching Maura and her friends.
Days later, Boston homicide detective Jane Rizzoli receives the grim news that Maura’s charred body has been found in a mountain ravine. Shocked and grieving, Jane is determined to learn what happened to her friend. The investigation plunges Jane into the twisted history of Kingdom Come, where a gruesome discovery lies buried beneath the snow. As horrifying revelations come to light, Jane closes in on an enemy both powerful and merciless—and the chilling truth about Maura’s fate.

"I read a few reviews of this book and I'd already started listening to the story, and I was not able to put it away of an evening. I was quite surprised that the reviews I read were unfavourable. The reviews were written by people who'd read other Tess Gerritsen novels and stated that this was not among her best. I, however thoroughly enjoyed it. I especially loved the first part of the story where everything goes from bad to worse for Maura Isles. Some of the characters with her were a bit painful, but that only made me like Maura more. As with all of Tess Gerritsen's novels, I enjoy the medical information combined with the criminal drama. A very enjoyable listen."

— Faith, 2/18/2014" Stranded near Jackson Hole in a snow storm, a group finds shelter in an abandoned town called Kingdom Come. Pretty good book! "
— Marla, 2/13/2014" Loved it, loved it, loved it!!Kept me glued to the book, couldn't wait to go to bed in the evenings and read some more. Great to include a cult storyline but I'm not sure if I'm disappointed that she didn't go ahead and let the cult take the blame for the dead's or in awe that she came up with such an alternative...can't wait for the next book! "
— The, 2/12/2014" another good one. Rizzoli & Isles are addicting. "
— Aimee, 2/12/2014" Not her best, by far. Too many random events and characters without growth or purpose in the story. "
— Yvette, 2/6/2014" Boston Medical Examiner Maura Isles returns in a snowbound thriller set in the mountains of Idaho.[return]A medical conference gives Maura a much-needed break from her rocky relationship with Fr. Brophy, until she and new friends are caught on a snowy mountain road. Their car stuck, they seek shelter in a small enclave of abandoned homes off the road. Maura is drawn into the mystery of the residents departure as she and her friends try to find a way out of the mountains.[return]This book will grab you from the start and expose you to survivalist adventure and the horrors of a polygamous cult. The ending is a bit disappointing but you ll enjoy the ride! "
