For the second time in his short life, Teddy Clock has survived a massacre. Two years ago, he barely escaped when his entire family was slaughtered. Now, at fourteen, in a hideous echo of the past, Teddy is the lone survivor of his foster family’s mass murder. Orphaned once more, the traumatized teenager has nowhere to turn—until the Boston PD puts Detective Jane Rizzoli on the case. Determined to protect this young man, Jane discovers that what seemed like a coincidence is instead just one horrifying part of a relentless killer’s merciless mission.
Jane spirits Teddy to the exclusive Evensong boarding school, a sanctuary where young victims of violent crime learn the secrets and skills of survival in a dangerous world. But even behind locked gates, and surrounded by acres of sheltering Maine wilderness, Jane fears that Evensong’s mysterious benefactors aren’t the only ones watching. When strange blood-splattered dolls are found dangling from a tree, Jane knows that her instincts are dead on. And when she learns of Will Yablonski and Claire Ward, students whose tragic pasts bear a shocking resemblance to Teddy’s, it becomes chillingly clear that a circling predator has more than one victim in mind.
Joining forces with her trusted partner, medical examiner Maura Isles, Jane is determined to keep these orphans safe from harm. But an unspeakable secret dooms the children’s fate—unless Jane and Maura can finally put an end to an obsessed killer’s twisted quest.

"Really enjoyed this novel. Love Rizzoli & Isles and they both have major parts in this book. Lots of twists and turns as Maura goes to the Maine school where Julian is enrolled (with Bear by his side), along with three other children who have lost their parents to murder...and their foster parents as well, why are the children still alive...something is going on and Maura and Jane are on the case."
— Lora (5 out of 5 stars)
" A little predictable but a fun, quick read. "
— Angie, 2/16/2014" Excellent! Her writing does not waver. Each time I read one, I think this will be the one that will not be as good as the last, but alas I'm proven wrong every time "
— Georgie, 2/15/2014" Another good Rizzoli & Isles. For awhile Isles was my favorite but now I'm tending to Rizzoli. Isles is always too conflicted and distant. Nevertheless, that doesn't rob the story of its enjoyment and I was even surprised by one of the plot twists. "
— Luan, 2/8/2014" My kind of mystery novel! Fast read "
— Roberta, 2/3/2014" I enjoyed the book bug not as much as I thought I thought j would. I watch the Tv show and the time line was essa lot farther in the future kn the book. Which made it a little hard to follow at first. I would rate it 2 1/2 stars. I think I need to read some of older books which follow the Tv series closer. "
— Elaine, 1/28/2014" fast moving easy read descriptive of forensics and nature "
— Helen, 1/25/2014" this book was very good but a little more cloak and dagger than she usually writes. "
— Sharon, 1/23/2014" I found this book interesting, at times it was hard to put down at other times I had to put it down just to ponder over what I had just read. I would recommend this book to friends. "
— Roxie, 1/19/2014" I found it hard to get into and easy to put down for the most part. Once I got into it, about half way through, it wasn't bad. Only one plot twist I didn't expect. "
— Amanda, 12/24/2013" Forget the TV series based on this Boston series! The books are grittier, darker, and addictive. Gerritsen also has a medical mystery series, but I prefer these. Must be read in order. "
— Betsy, 12/16/2013" Gerritson's Rizzoli and Isles series never disappoints! Thank you for a truly enjoyable ride!! "
— Saphstone, 12/14/2013" This new Rizzoli and Isles book is pretty decent. Takes place in Maine which was interesting for us. "
— Icicle4, 12/13/2013" I think the Rizzoli & Isles series is just getting better and better. It's great when a series doesn't go downhill. "
— Jessica, 12/13/2013" One of Tess Gerritsen's best! It kept me on the edge of my seat til the very end with all kinds of twists and turns. I'm sad because it's over. I might read it again! "
— Krystina, 11/28/2013" I highly recommend this book :))) "
— Ninz, 11/28/2013" I enjoyed this book, but I am getting a bit tired of the Mephisto Club. If I want secret societies, I'll read Dan Brown. "
— Leah, 10/1/2013" Brilliant! Really enjoyed this book. Read it in two days. "
— Joyce, 9/5/2013" 3.5 would be more accurate. "
— Chandra, 7/2/2013" Very interesting. I watch the Rizzoli & Isles TV show so I was able to put faces to the characters in the book. I will be reading more of her books in the future. "
— Del, 4/13/2013" Kind of hard to follow in the begining but a good book. "
— Glmomich, 3/29/2013" Strong, suspenseful story line. Just too many characters strung together with too unlikely connection. "
— Alana, 3/21/2013" Best Rizzoli and Isles thriller since The Mephisto Club. "
— Claire, 3/5/2013" Really enjoyed this one, it had me on d wrong track until last few pages "
— Evelyn, 2/21/2013" Great book, couldn't put it down. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it wasn't all that original, same as her other books. Predictable in that it will be unpredictable. "
— Anne-marie, 2/21/2013" Good story line, some repeating which I don't like, but other than that enjoyed this book. "
— Barb, 2/9/2013" Tess has written a very interesting thriller this time round with a rather surprising twist. As the homicide of a boy's foster family, leads Boston PD on a spirilling wild goose chase for clues as to what this homicide has in common with 2 other similar cases. "
— Jake, 1/21/2013" Better than the previous book. "
— Emily, 12/22/2012" 4.5. Great read! Went to the library today to check out several in this series I had not read. "
— Alicek, 10/19/2012" I'm a huge fan of this series and its characters. Happy to report it still has plenty of steam left as Last to Die was excellent across the boards. I can't wait for the next book in the series to be written and released! "
— D.L., 9/10/2012" Enjoyable if a bit tedious in places. It's good but a bit lacking when compared to the series' earlier books. "
— Ellie N., 9/7/2012" Great story with a fast moving plot that keeps you guessing the whole way and plenty of action. I would have liked to see a little more overall character development though but thoroughly enjoyable regardless. "
— Sarah J., 9/5/2012" Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles are 2 of my favorite book characters of late and 'Last to Die' is a fantastic outing for them. The story sucks you in and doesn't let go until the thrilling conclusion. "
— Steve J., 9/3/2012" I liked this though it was a bit too predictable and formulaic for my taste. I think the author has gotten a bit too comfortable and is cruising on autopilot. "
— A.F., 9/1/2012" This was another thrilling page-turner by one of my absolute favorite authors. The story was awesome and I never saw the ending coming. "
