Socks is one happy cat. He lives with a nice young couple called the Brickers who play with him, pet him, feed him treats, and always have a warm lap for him to sit in. Then a new baby joins the family. Suddenly, the Brickers are sharing their laps and love with Charles William, and Socks is getting into all sorts of trouble. He runs from a phantom dog, wrestles with Nana's best wig, and fights Old Taylor the tomcat for territory. But as Charles William grows, Socks discovers that he has a new best friend and a new way to be part of the family.

A purr-fectly hilarious portrait of life with a baby from a cat's point of view. Download and start listening now!

" This book is so 70s - the mom wears sandals, the dad has a mustache and his mom wears a wig, although he thinks hair should be kept 'natural'. "

" While I like Beverly Clearly's "Ramona" and "Henry" series the best, her singular work "Socks" is pretty good too. I have always loved cats and it was fun to read a story told from a cat's perspective. My favorite part was at the very beginning when Socks is a kitten and has a run-in with some bratty kids. "

" An extremely warm-hearted book with a good message. I appreciate the ability of the author, Beverly Cleary, to clearly identify with what readers like me want in a good book. Socks always has been my favorite book :). "

" Love, love, love Beverly Cleary and I knew I wouldn't regret picking up Socks. Great story about an animal that is truly loved, but yet afraid when there is a new baby in the family. I think this story can relate to children even in the way they may feel when a new baby brother or sister arrives! "

" Neil Patrick Harris narrated this audiobook, which was a fun look at having a new baby in the house, from the cat's perspective. Might be a good book to have kids read when parents are expecting a new baby, to help prepare them for the baby taking away their parents' attention. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Brenna | 5/11/2012

About the Author
Author Beverly Cleary

Beverly Cleary was born in McMinnville, Oregon, and until she was old enough to attend school she lived on a farm in Yamhill, a town so small it had no library. Her mother arranged to have books sent to their tiny town from the state library and acted as a librarian in a room over a bank. It was there that Mrs. Cleary learned to love books. Generations of children have grown up with Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins, Ralph Mouse, and all of their friends, families, and assorted pets. Cleary continues to capture the hearts and imaginations of children of all ages throughout the world.
