Newbery Medal-winning author Beverly Cleary brings her understanding and warmth to every page of this wonderful story of a "bad boy."
When it comes to stirring up a little excitement in class, Otis Spofford knows just what to do. He can turn a folk dance fiesta into a three-ring circus . . . or an arithmetic lesson into a spitball marathon.
Best of all, Otis likes teasing neat, well-behaved Ellen Tebbits—until the day his teasing goes too far. Now Otis is nervous, because Ellen isn't just mad . . . she's planning something!

"One of the few Beverly Clearys I didn't read when I was a child. As a teacher, I love reading about the wily kid that always gets in trouble. It helps me connect with my own little hellions. Otis Spofford remind me of my sweet little C******* who once told me, with the utmost sincerity, that he wasn't cheating on his spelling test, but "looking at the spelling words in my desk to see how to spell them!" Um...that's cheating. He and Otis could be brothers!"

“Mrs. Cleary writes from a sure knowledge of the third grader’s world. It all rings true.”
— New York Times“A really hilarious boy who is a classroom comedian, a show-off and a pest, but still very lovable.”
— Publishers Weekly“Johnny Heller's clear, crisp voice is perfect for the story. As a comedian, Heller lends an element of levity to his reading. His acting skills are apparent as the story's characters take on subtly different voice inflections.”
— School Library Journal" Beverly Cleary was on eof the favorites of my childhood, and while my kids were less attached to her, they still enjoyed her books--this is a good one. "
— Catherine, 2/8/2014" The kids can't wait to find out what "excitement" Ottis is going to get into. "
— Amanda, 2/6/2014" 'There was nothing better Otis Spofford liked better than stirring up a little excitement.' So starts 'Otis Spofford.' Otis Spofford is an only and fatherless child who lives with his distracted working mother in a small apartment. Otis Spofford, playing cowboys and Indians (one of several anachronisms in 'Otis Spofford,' such as kids using the word 'keen') 'scalps' a classmate obsessed with growing her hair longer by cutting off a hunk of that hair. Otis Spofford meets the 'comeuppance' promised by his fourth grade teacher when the classmate extracts revenge. Otis Spofford--Beverly Cleary's antihero? "
— Lars, 2/2/2014" Entertaining stories about the troublesome Otis. One chapter is dated in which the school children act out as violent Indians. "
— Mary-Jane, 1/22/2014" Just as good as the Ramonas. "
— Melanie, 1/16/2014" This hilarious book is a must for any 1-3 grade boy! I read it myself just for fun and now I'm reading it with my 6 year old. "
— Sarah, 1/16/2014" This was the very first chapter book I ever read. I remember reading under the covers with a flashlight so that my parents wouldn't know I was staying up late. This was the definitive book that made me want to be a writer. "
— Shelter, 1/16/2014" Otis is a naughty boy. As a child I got a vicarious thrill in reading of his escapades because I knew I'd never do the things he did. Not my favorite Beverly Cleary book, but I did enjoy reading it. "

Some of her many awards include the Newbery Medal, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, and the National Medal of Arts. She was born in McMinnville, Oregon, and lived on a farm in Yamhill, a town so small it had no library. Generations of children have grown up with Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins, Ralph Mouse, and all of their friends, families, and assorted pets. Her books continue to capture the hearts and imaginations of children of all ages throughout the world.
