Amanda Quick's bestselling trademark is a combination of suspense and passion in historical tales alight with sparkling wit and brimming with dangerous intrigue. Now she serves up the most tantalizing novel of her career as an enterprising woman allies herself with a mysterious spy, only to be caught in a seething brew of treachery — and temptation....
From the moment he burst into her antiquities shop in Rome, Lavinia Lake knew the stranger was nothing but trouble. He said he was in pursuit of a killer. He swore he was only trying to save her. Yet no matter what he claimed, Lavinia was convinced that Mr. Tobias March was bent instead on destroying her. And when the self-described spy hustled her and her niece out of the shop and back to England, Lavinia could only hope that one day she would would find a way to repay Mr. March in full.
But Lavinia never imagined the shocking circumstances under which they would meet again ... or that soon he would become more deadly — and more compelling — with each passing day.
In the business of making private inquiries, Tobias March had been hired to trade down a powerful villain who even now was intent on assuming control of a vast criminal organization. Yet in his search he had found nothing but one dead end — and one dead body — after another.
And then, just as his investigation was heating up once more, he found his mission and his life complicated by the most ungovernable, unpredictable, exasperating woman he had ever met.
Faced with a tangled web of deceit and danger, Tobias had no choice but to form a partnership with Lavinia, a lady whose past could only be described as slightly shady. Yet when he persuaded her to become his associate, neither Tobias nor Lavinia realized that their heated disputes would spark a sizzling desire — or that the deeper they kept digging for the truth, the deeper they were digging their own graves....

"Pretty good. A really quick read (pun intended), for a boring afternoon. A typical regency type mystery/romance, with victorian attitudes towards women and their being anything approaching a professional. Lavinia Lake, almost poverty-stricken, is rescued from sure death by Tobias March in Italy, then again and again in England, after she takes on a parallel role as a private detective, forcing him to eventually take her as a partner. Only a tiny bit of sex, not very graphic."

If you start an Amanda Quick book in the late afternoon, you'll probably spend the night with it.
— The Denver PostSpirited heroines and sardonic heroes populate this sexy Regency-era thriller by the ever reliable Quick ... Quick offers the parry and thrust of danger and romance ... Works splendidly.
— Publishers Weekly" This is book one in the Lake/March series. I had read book 3 first and thought I'd go back to the beginning of the series. I found the book to be fast paced with just the right amounts of romance and mystery in a historical setting in England. "
— Jody, 2/16/2014" This wasn't a great book--well at least for me. I don't read a great many romance novels. I wasn't sold onto the main characters--Lavinia Lake, is an Englishwoman who returns to England after her shop in Rome is destroyed by a stranger who claims to be looking for criminals that were using her shop. Her character is 'unreal' to me. Tobias March is the investigator looking into the crimes. He seems more of a bully then anything else. AND yes the two character 'get together' at the end. "
— Roxann, 2/11/2014" This one could also go into a "trashy thriller" column and I rather liked that about it. It was fluffy and mindless in all the right ways but had a more entertaining plot than a lot of books you'd find on the shelves next to it. Also wax museums. I like the idea of Victorian wax museums. "
— Shiraz, 2/10/2014" It was more complex than I expected - really enjoyable, ready for the next in the series! "
— Megan, 2/5/2014" All of the Amanda Quick books that I read in 2006 were pretty much the same. They are set in 1800's London and involve a female detective. I probably won't read any more of her books. "
— Jaimie, 2/3/2014" An outstanding novel of historical romance and suspense. Lavinia Lake and Tobias March are a fascinating sleuthing team. Luckily their characters continue on in DON'T LOOK BACK, book two in the trilogy. "
— Livia, 2/1/2014" I have to admit I found myself laughing at some parts of the book. the banter between the character I enjoyed. however, as the story progressed it became less about the characters and more about the story, which was fine, but not great. "
— Sidra, 1/30/2014" Very stilted prose, would think OH PLUUEESE, when reading it. Quick can do better than this. "
— Ginny, 1/22/2014" Fun mystery with a bit of romance. "
— Katie, 1/18/2014" A fun and entertaining light read with amusing characters that are easy to become fond of and cheer on in their escapades! "
— Poppy, 1/7/2014" I like the relationship between the main characters, but got irritated by how obnoxious Lavinia comes off throughout the stoy. She seems like she needs a good...well you know. ;) "
— Mia, 1/3/2014" Another one that was so bad I stopped reading after the first couple of chapters. "
— becky, 12/29/2013" As partners Mrs. Lake and Mr. March have two distinct personalities, however, they are still lovers. "
— Clifford, 12/21/2013" Good mystery! The extended confession of one of the villains was a bit much, but still, it was good. "
