Chaz Perrone might be the only marine scientist in the world who doesn’t know which way the Gulf Stream runs. He might also be the only one who went into biology just to make a killing, and now he’s found a way–doctoring water samples so that a ruthless agribusiness tycoon can continue illegally dumping fertilizer into the endangered Everglades. When Chaz suspects that his wife, Joey, has figured out his scam, he pushes her overboard from a cruise liner into the night-dark Atlantic. Unfortunately for Chaz, his wife doesn’t die in the fall. Clinging blindly to a bale of Jamaican pot, Joey Perrone is plucked from the ocean by former cop and current loner Mick Stranahan. Instead of rushing to the police and reporting her husband’s crime, Joey decides to stay dead and (with Mick’s help) screw with Chaz until he screws himself. As Joey haunts and taunts her homicidal husband, as Chaz’s cold-blooded cohorts in pollution grow uneasy about his ineptitude and increasingly erratic behavior, as Mick Stranahan discovers that six failed marriages and years of island solitude haven’t killed the reckless romantic in him, we’re taken on a hilarious, full-throttle, pure Hiaasen ride through the warped politics and mayhem of the human environment, and the human heart.

"A typical quick Carl Hiassen read. The main character in this one is called Joey Perrone. She is married to an unscrupulous biologist. They are on a cruise, when he pushes her overboard in the middle of the night, expecting her to drown. Miraculously she lives, and the rest of the book is about her attempts to extract revenge on him. She gains the help of a recluse living in a stilt house, a police detective from Minnesota who keeps large snakes and a bodyguard who is addicted to pain patches."

" Confession: I listened to the abridgment on audio CD while driving in my truck. This was just pure fun to listen to. "
— Tom, 1/19/2014" I just love Carl Hiaasen. His characters are so quirky and the situations so bizarre. The good guys always win in the end and the bad guys come to some very peculiar end. But my all-time favorite remains Tourist Season. You can mess with that mouse in Orlando. But you can't steal the Orange Bowl Queen. "
— Jan, 1/13/2014" I seem to share Mr. Hiassen's peculiar view of the world and his 2 locations - Minnesota & Florida are oddly compatible. "
— Claudia, 1/12/2014" Wonderful! Only Carl can create a truly dispicable character like the husband in this book. A very rewarding read! Be warned, don't read it in a group of people, because it is 'laugh out loud' funny! "
— Mitzy, 12/31/2013" Yet another wonderful book from Hiaasen! "
— Alyse, 12/14/2013" Another great one from Hiaasen. "
— Rob, 12/9/2013" I'm reading this again but I'm almost finished. I love the build up and detail of the characters in this book! That detail makes the story so much more fun. Why don't I have any more Hiaasen books?! "
— Tinkalanashai, 11/13/2013" I loved the book. It was interesting and very well written. "
— Emily, 10/28/2013" This was a very fun book to read...very light, humorous yet with a bit of mystery. "
— Dawne, 10/7/2013" I listened to this on audio book, and it seems that Barry Bostwick's reading of it is what sold me. Entertaining, quick, fun read. Take this to the beach or on a road trip. "
— Angela, 10/5/2013" Not very stimulating, but did make me laugh. "
— Timlin, 9/11/2013" Terrific book with great laughs, twists and turns but also lots of important information regarding the disappearance and misuse of the Everglades. "
— Celeste, 9/4/2013" This is my first Carl Hiaasen book. Kinda light, fun, sexy. A major revenge on a major A-hole tale. "
— Jaynez, 8/16/2013" Almost as funny as Lucky You but still a must read. "
— Mailmanr5, 8/11/2013" Great opening! Funny, fast paced, and entertaining. "
— Therese, 6/24/2013" Always an enjoyable read. Characters are developed and the situations are hilarious. "
— Dan, 6/21/2013" Weird... but hilarious. Great social commentary, too. "
— Louise, 4/8/2013" one of his best, and the last one i have, read all his books, what a ride! "
— Nora, 12/17/2012" My first and favorite Carl Hiaasen book! I recommend this to everyone. My Grandma enjoyed it immensely as did my mom - a book for all generations in your family. "
— Heather, 12/1/2012" New author to me. Slow to get started but then got to a point I wanted to finish it. Enjoyed it but don't think I would recommend it. Anyone read any of his other books that you enjoyed? "
— Soni, 11/27/2012" Another great book from Hiaasen. Like Parker he writes with economy of words, but says so much. "
— Charles, 11/23/2012" This is my brother-in-law's favourite book ever. I read it to pacify him, but I'm not taking any more recommendations. "
— Lynley, 10/30/2012" Hilarious book. I loved it! I can't wait to read some of his other books! "
— Mike, 10/2/2012" Loved it! The conflict, the characters (esp. Tool and Maureen), the plot. A VERY fun read! "
— Stacey, 9/19/2012" started but only read a few chaoters "
— Lisa, 6/18/2012" From the first few chapters, it seems like a Christopher Buckley-type humorous book. And now that I've finished it, a great beach read. Fun and goes quickly. "
— Hilary, 4/4/2012" I laughed my ass off all the way through this book. My first Hiaasen, but if the rest can equal this one, I won't be disappointed. The character of "Tool" alone was worth the cost of the book. Hilarious! "
— Laini, 2/21/2012" Very silly book and not serious at all, but an enjoyable read.... "
— Elizabeth, 6/30/2011" Entertaining as a light read. Great pool or beach book, especially since it's set in Florida :) "
— Sarah, 6/30/2011" I LOVED this book. Read at the beach, on a lake, by the river...but NOT on a cruise! You will laugh out loud, roll around on the floor and jones for a fruity drink with an umbrella in it! "
— Patty, 6/30/2011" Humorous enough writing, but I was annoyed with the overly sexualized female characters. What exactly was everyone's plan through out the book? It seems if you have carte blanche of being presumed dead and rich beyond means, you could come up with a better revenge plan. "
— Patti, 6/27/2011" fun read--though the convoluted plot later in the book seemed a little unclear in spots. Still, I'll read more of his books. "
— Mary, 6/19/2011" This book combines a tale of greed and misfortune to a couple that is disfunctional which leads the wife to take her own life and ingenuinty to the next level "
— Cheenar, 6/16/2011" LOVED this book! Just don't read on a cruise! "
— Erin, 6/12/2011" No way! An action book with a story centered around agricultural water pollution! Yeah! And the characters were fun, too -- Joey is great. "
— Katie, 6/11/2011" if you like either florida or laughing, read this. a real hoot. "
— bobby, 6/8/2011" Really good for summer reading. Quick moving plot with interesting characters. "
— Hallie, 6/1/2011" He throws his wife over board in the middle of the night on the cruise ship ... and I'm laughing? This was funny? Yes! And on from there, an incredibly, irresistibly ridiculous story! I must find more books by Carl Hiassen. Who is this crazy guy? "
— Dorothy, 5/30/2011" Three and a half stars, really. For some reason, I expected it to be better. Instead of reading it because I wanted to know what was going to happen, I read it just so I could get to the end and then move on to another book. "
