" Largely solid historical romance, with one relatively minor problem that made me crazy throughout the first two-thirds of the book: The premise is that the virginal and spinstery heroine is headed off to a remote castle to satisfy the sexual urges of the hero to wipe out the ruinous debts that the heroine's sister has accumulated from gambling; she discovers he's actually been badly wronged by her relatives, and maybe she doesn't really want to be a spinster, and eventually they join forces to right the various wrongs that have been done to them (though not without some frustrating bickering in between). But nowhere in the book--and certainly not in the first pages, where we really, really need it--is any mention of the specifics of the agreement that the hero, the heroine's sister, and the heroine have cooked up. Is the heroine obliged to sleep with the hero? Is she just supposed to spend the night in the castle? Or is she supposed to be there for a full seven days? It was unclear exactly how long she was supposed to stay and what she was supposed to do to satisfy the debt her sister had incurred, and while that may not seem like a big deal, it seriously dampened the tension for me because the stakes were unclear.
