A Newbery Honor recipient

Thirteen is when a Beaumont’s savvy hits—and with one brother who causes hurricanes and another who creates electricity, Mibs Beaumont is eager to see what she gets. But just before the big day, Poppa is in a terrible accident. And now all Mibs wants is a savvy that will save him. In fact, Mibs is so sure she’ll get a powerful savvy that she sneaks a ride to the hospital on a rickety bus with her sibling and the preacher’s kids in tow. After this extraordinary adventure—full of talking tattoos and a kidnapping—not a soul on board will ever be the same. Download and start listening now!

" Fabulous book for a young reader--middle school age. I was not sucked into the plot, but the characters and their "magical" powers were fascinating. A girl who can hear people's tatoos talking--what's not to like about that? "

" My students absolutely love this book. It's up for the Colorado Children's Book Award and got the most votes from my school. I should love this book. I liked the book. I enjoyed the premise that members of the Baumont family get their savvy, magical power, when they turn 13. Each received a different power, a unique skill that the person had to learn to control. Mibs Baumont goes on an exciting adventure with her two brothers and eventual friends to find and save her father. Law creates interesting characters and a pleasant story. I wish it captured me more than it did. I will read Scumble, so it did excite me enough to want to read more. "

" I really liked the story of the Beaumont family and their quirky powers that they discover on their thirteenth birthday! It is a story of love of family, the importance of good friends and enduring to the end if something is right. Great story! "

" The book was quick to catch my interest but it had some slower parts in the middle. Maybe I was just having a sleepy day, but it got slowish for a while. The author uses interesting language and the characters are all enjoyable (and sometimes strange). I like how the story wrapped up. I would have given it 4 stars, because it probably does deserve that many, but for me I just "liked it." "

" I think this chapter book would be better for older students. I would say somewhere around middle school. It's a good book about adventure and how Mibs will find her Savvy. "
