A summer adventure you'll never forget, from a beloved Newbery Honor winning author! Dad and Ben haven't been getting along lately, and Dad hopes a road trip to rescue a border collie will help them reconnect. But Ben is on to Dad's scheme, and he's got ideas of his own. Like inviting his buddy, Theo, who's sure to get into fun (and trouble) along the way. And if Dad wants a family road trip, then the family dog, Atticus, should get to come, too. What could go wrong? But when their truck breaks down, the family trip takes plenty of unexpected turns. Before they know it, they've commandeered an old school bus and joined forces with its cranky mechanic, Gus. Next, they pick up Mia, a waitress escaping a tense situation. Only sharp-eyed Atticus realizes that Theo is on the run from something bad—and someone is following them. With alternating chapters from both Ben and his dog, Atticus, this fast-paced book takes readers on an unpredictable ride that's all about family, friendship, and surprises.

"I hate to admit that this is my first Gary Paulsen book. Road Trip is interesting. My 11-yr-old read it first and when I asked her what it was about, she had a hard time telling me. Now I know why. It's mish-mash of crazy people and events over two days as a father and son hit the road to rescue a border collie pup from a dog pound. It's very short, only 114 pages but a lot is crammed in there. What I liked best about it is the voice of 14-yr-old Ben. I was seeing the world through a teenager's perspective and it was eye-opening. A quick, fun read that I'm sure fans of Paulsen will enjoy."

" I am a big fan of Gary Paulsen. I usually really enjoy his books. This one was good, but not as good as others I've read. It is simple and enjoyable. I love the parts that are from the dog's point of view. :) It would be a good, easy read when you don't feel like a heavy read. "
— Nicki, 1/31/2014" Road Trip is a light adventure story bringing a cast of quirky characters, a dog together and a bus on a quest to rescue border collie pup. This is a new Paulsen father/son collaboration. "
— Julie, 1/29/2014" Gary and his son make a good team. Short but great story. "
— Pat, 1/20/2014" 2 border collies on the cover - I can't resist! Great author's note at the beginning but the rest of the book reads a bit like a hi-lo/reluctant reader type of book, which cost it a star. I wish Paulsen would have fleshed out the dog parts more and had less of the mile a minute action. Little bit of a surprise at the end. The 128 pages begs to be in elementary school, but I think it's a better fit for middle and high school. "
— Bethe, 1/13/2014" Good choice for reluctant boy readers. Short in length, but addresses many middle school themes. Loved the sections from the dog's point of view. "
— Laura, 1/10/2014" Hard not to like a book about rescuing a dog! "
— Tina, 1/1/2014" Finally a happy dog book "
— Robyn, 12/3/2013" Good story. The dog, Atticus, has short chapters of his own where he shares his insights into how the humans are acting. "
— Mary, 11/20/2013" Solid read. Main character is 14 and there are lots of issues that could place this book more in the YA section. However, it is tame and I think 10+ is a good age group for this. Lots of laughs in this book and a pretty darn good story. "
— Amy, 11/10/2013" Not his best work. Mature subjects but readability and cover will appeal to middle schoolers. A few humorous scenes with drag race between police and Dad. "
— Carol, 10/19/2013" Not one of Paulsen's best, but if you like dogs, you will enjoy the comments by the main character's dog Atticus. "
— Donna, 10/17/2013" This is a fun book to read. It is fast paced, and the author really understand the characters and how they think and act. This is a must read as there is never a dull moment. "
— Cynthia, 6/5/2013" A really entertaining adventure. Need to keep reading to find out what would happen next. Very appropriate for Juvenile's. Just plain fun,and a great book for dog lovers. "
— Suzette, 5/20/2013" I didn't even finish this! It is simply not up to the standard I have come to expect from this usually wonderful author! "
— Rose, 4/19/2013" Super cute! A dog book and no dog dies! :) "
— Lori, 4/15/2013" Father and son take off with 2 offbeat friends and a dog in a schoolbus to pick up a rescue puppy. The story is fast-paced, with funny characters getting into crazy situations.T he chapters alternate between the dog and the son narrating the road trip. "
— Drennan, 3/21/2013" Cute. Not much to it. I liked the bits from Atticus's perspective. "
— Laura, 3/19/2013" Quick, clean, fun story about a father and son trek to rescue a dog. At first, their only companion is their current dog, but events pull others into their journey and the road trip becomes about finding home in many different senses. "
