Publisher Description

A summer adventure you'll never forget, from a beloved Newbery Honor winning author! Dad and Ben haven't been getting along lately, and Dad hopes a road trip to rescue a border collie will help them reconnect. But Ben is on to Dad's scheme, and he's got ideas of his own. Like inviting his buddy, Theo, who's sure to get into fun (and trouble) along the way. And if Dad wants a family road trip, then the family dog, Atticus, should get to come, too. What could go wrong? But when their truck breaks down, the family trip takes plenty of unexpected turns. Before they know it, they've commandeered an old school bus and joined forces with its cranky mechanic, Gus. Next, they pick up Mia, a waitress escaping a tense situation. Only sharp-eyed Atticus realizes that Theo is on the run from something bad—and someone is following them.  With alternating chapters from both Ben and his dog, Atticus, this fast-paced book takes readers on an unpredictable ride that's all about family, friendship, and surprises.

"I hate to admit that this is my first Gary Paulsen book. Road Trip is interesting. My 11-yr-old read it first and when I asked her what it was about, she had a hard time telling me. Now I know why. It's mish-mash of crazy people and events over two days as a father and son hit the road to rescue a border collie pup from a dog pound. It's very short, only 114 pages but a lot is crammed in there. What I liked best about it is the voice of 14-yr-old Ben. I was seeing the world through a teenager's perspective and it was eye-opening. A quick, fun read that I'm sure fans of Paulsen will enjoy."

" I am a big fan of Gary Paulsen. I usually really enjoy his books. This one was good, but not as good as others I've read. It is simple and enjoyable. I love the parts that are from the dog's point of view. :) It would be a good, easy read when you don't feel like a heavy read. "

" Road Trip is a light adventure story bringing a cast of quirky characters, a dog together and a bus on a quest to rescue border collie pup. This is a new Paulsen father/son collaboration. "

" 2 border collies on the cover - I can't resist! Great author's note at the beginning but the rest of the book reads a bit like a hi-lo/reluctant reader type of book, which cost it a star. I wish Paulsen would have fleshed out the dog parts more and had less of the mile a minute action. Little bit of a surprise at the end. The 128 pages begs to be in elementary school, but I think it's a better fit for middle and high school. "

" Solid read. Main character is 14 and there are lots of issues that could place this book more in the YA section. However, it is tame and I think 10+ is a good age group for this. Lots of laughs in this book and a pretty darn good story. "
