Publisher Description

The award-winning creator of popular survival stories turns his attention to his own real life adventures in Minnesota and Alaska as he prepares for the grueling Iditarod sled dog race. "I thought this book was great. I could put it down when I needed or wanted to, but it was a very good book. Gary Paulson writes just like Louis L'Amour, and he does not care how gruesome his writing is. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good read."

" The first half was just recolections of the lessons the guy lerned form his sled dogs. At first they were really interesting, but after a while they got rather boring. When he got to the part where he races the Iditarod, it got more interesting. This book over all was good, it taught you a lot. "

" A very short book that I listened to. It tell of true experiences of Gary Paulsen in Alaska and is read by the author himself. Most of it tells of his Iditarod experience which is fascinating but I wish it would have been a little longer with more info. Good book. "

" Gary Paulsen tells the story of his relationship with his dogs and his first Iditarod. The book seemed somewhat disjointed to me, especially when he goes from talking about the dogs and then starts in on the Iditarod with no buildup about getting there. Just so-so. "

" Paulsen uses his experiences of dogsledding and the grueling Iditerod well in this book that shows the adventure and threat of this sport. His relationship with his dogs and the grit he had to show to endure the race makes the narrative riveting. "

" I didn't enjoy this as much as Paulsen's other books (of which I have only read fiction) because the narrative was a series of vignettes loosely connected by the theme of running sled dogs. It was still an interesting look at this topic, but could have been developed in a more entertaining way. "
