Publisher Description

The New York Times bestselling novel from Dennis Lehane is a gripping, unnerving psychological thriller about the effects of a savage killing on three former friends in a tightly knit, blue-collar Boston neighborhood.

When they were children, Sean Devine, Jimmy Marcus, and Dave Boyle were friends. But then a strange car pulled up to their street. One boy got into the car, two did not, and something terrible happened -- something that ended their friendship and changed all three boys forever.

Twenty-five years later, Sean is a homicide detective. Jimmy is an ex-con who owns a corner store. And Dave is trying to hold his marriage together and keep his demons at bay -- demons that urge him to do terrible things. When Jimmy's daughter is found murdered, Sean is assigned to the case. His investigation brings him into conflict with Jimmy, who finds his old criminal impulses tempt him to solve the crime with brutal justice. And then there is Dave, who came home the night Jimmy's daughter died covered in someone else's blood.

A tense and unnerving psychological thriller, Mystic River is also an epic novel of love and loyalty, faith and family, in which people irrevocably marked by the past find themselves on a collision course with the darkest truths of their own hidden selves.

"This novel takes place in Boston, Massachusetts, during the 1970's and 80's. The story starts with three young friends, Jimmy, Sean, and Dave, and Dave gets kidnapped by child molesters and escapes four days later. The story then takes place when the three friends grow up and are joined in each other's lives again when Jimmy's daughter gets murdered and the search for the murderer begins. I would recommend this book to people who love mystery because this was a very good mystery story for readers."

" I've read most of Dennis Lehane's novels, and he improved dramatically when he switched to third person in this book. I don't know if writing in the third person had anything to do with it, but this is his best book by far. "

" It is an emotional reading, very engaging all throughout. All three major characters, the three childhood friends were given ample characterization so that this reader felt cheering for all of them, even with their flaws. I am just saddened how things turned out, but that's Life for you. Mystic River is my first Dennis Lehane novel and I'm eager to read more of his books. "

" I bought this book years ago and had it sitting on my to read shelf ever since. Decided to finally read it and was not disappointed. It's not a feel good book but a dark story of 3 boys and how one brief encounter when they were 11 affected each one in different ways. Well worth the read. "
