"This is a mystery/detective story set in Boston. Another series that I started in the middle, but it doesn't seem to matter. I would like to read some of the earlier stories. It was interesting how the killer really wasn't a killer because the main victim was a suicide. I won't give things away but if you like "A hard-boiled shocker." -NYT book review I think you'd enjoy this."

“Prayers for Rain...has all the elements a good mystery needs: a strong cast of characters and sense of place, gripping suspense, fluid dialogue, and meticulous plotting...The book is a page-turner...Lehane’s dialogue is fast and funny...He’s a gifted storyteller.”
— Boston Globe“Dennis Lehane is a master...An A-plus novel—the plus is for thrills.”
— Philadelphia Inquirer“With Prayers for Rain, Dennis Lehane confirms his place on a very short list of mystery writers who can do it all and do it brilliantly: plot, setting, mood, characters. In five increasingly complex novels, he simply hasn’t hit a wrong note.”
— Cleveland Plain Dealer“Fine characterizations and edgy dialogue...Packed with punchy action sequences, uneasy stretches where the reader squirms in anticipation of impending disaster, and plenty of dark humor. Dennis Lehane has all the tools of a future Grand Master—the dialogue of Parker, the plotting of Block, the psychological suspense of Rendell—and in Prayers for Rain, he shows them off to fine effect.”
— Houston Chronicle“Dennis Lehane continues to show his artistry for the hard-boiled noir novel and his flair for examining the moral complexities of the times. Lehane skillfully takes the conventions of the classical hard-boiled novel and adds the sensibilities of the day to produce a mystery that is as modern as it is traditional...An elegant stylist, Lehane captures the beauty and grit of his native Boston...In Prayers for Rain, Lehane delivers a pristinely noir novel that is as poignant as it is fast-paced, with a story that looks at the myths of our lives and the morality we choose or discard.”
— Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel“With plot twists, mistaken identities, and vivid visual descriptions, Prayers for Rain is difficult to put down.”
— Austin American-Statesman“Rich in place and people...A violent and strangely sensitive novel.”
— San Antonio Express-News“Gripping and fast-paced.”
— St. Petersburg Times“A hip, edgy tale...Prayers for Rain is close to perfect in its pacing, characterizations, plot, and suspense. It is a perfect book for the summer hammock, though it won’t help you sleep.”
— Denver Rocky Mountain News“Lehane shows a gift for stringing out scenes and creating tension—sexual, homicidal, you name it—that makes a reader eager to find out what comes next...But don’t race ahead and cheat yourself out of the local pleasures.”
— People“With sharp dialogue, inventively gruesome violence, and the darkest of dark humor, Lehane’s fifth novel proves again that he’s the hippest heir of Hammett and Chandler.”
— Publishers Weekly" Total crime porn -- probably doesn't deserve four stars, but despite all the cliches ("Bubba," even if used somewhat ironically, is pretty lame), it was highly readable. "
— Alissa, 2/15/2014" Soooooo not my fave, but it was ok "
— Tanya, 2/10/2014" I read a couple by Dennis Lehane but I gave up on him "
— Mainrun, 1/24/2014" Outstanding; Continuing characters: Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro; after a nice woman is driven to destructive behaviors and suicide, the detectives try and reconstruct who destroyed her life, and find the attention now turned to them. "
— Joe, 1/24/2014" This was an enjoyable read. I have liked this author's work in the past and was not disappointed. Not as many great surprises as some of my favorites, but well worth the time to read. I liked it. "
— Tracy, 1/17/2014" The gritty realism of the novel really captivated me as a reader. The cruel twists and surprises throughout kept me riveted to the very end. I don't write spoiler reviews, but if you want a dark twisted roller coaster ride of a novel this is a must read! "
— Tami, 1/10/2014" good book. good story and thriller. maybe it should be better to know the end of the story at the end, not in the 2/4 of the book ... "
— Micheb, 1/10/2014" Great story with very appealing characters. "
— Maura, 1/10/2014" This is most definitely a 4.5 read. Lehane is pure genius when it comes to tying up all the loose ends, a place where other authors sometimes fall off the grid. Murder, mind games and laugh out loud sarcasm, what could be better. "
— Linda, 1/9/2014" The fifth and seemingly final installment of the series of Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro was nothing short of gripping. There P.I. adventures lead them into the grips of a psychological mastermind who seems to take pleasure in his work!! A quick and fast-paced read!! "
— Jeff, 12/23/2013" Three stars might be unfair. This book is better than scores of mysteries I have read, but within the series, it felt formulaic. Also, cheap shots at Western Mass make me grumpy. "
— Elizabeth, 12/5/2013" I like the Lehane mysteries, probably because they are all set in Boston! Mystic River was the best. "
— Pmcdnld2, 9/21/2013" I have read two other Dennis Lehane detective books- Gone Baby Gone and Mystic River. Prayers for Rain had the same main characters but the plot was nowhere near as exciting as the other two books. "
— Moxsl, 9/11/2013" Good but not as good as Shutter Island or Gone Baby Gone "
— Jeanine, 7/8/2013" Love all of the Kenzie & Gennaro books. They keep you turning the pages into the early morning hours. Can't put them down. It's better to have the next book handy because you'll want more when you finish. "
— Bethann, 5/6/2013" Another spell binding mystery. I could not put it down. "
— Gretchen, 4/16/2013" Lehane is a master, no question. He constructs a puzzle with great action, wonderful characters, especially the leads, and precise verisimilitude. I listened to this one on my car CD. It's short and punchy. Not deep, but deeply satisfying. "
— Nick, 3/8/2013" One of his average works. "
— Ramana, 9/18/2012" If you're going to read crime thrillers with prose that works the material and gives weight and dimension, Lehane's stuff does it. "
— Vincent, 8/30/2012" Good book, not as good as mystic river or shutter island, but still wicked good "
— Jeymei, 7/9/2012" I needed a middle-of-the-night book and this certainly met the need. Pure trash about unspeakable evil, but suspenseful and handy at 3 am. "
— Anne, 6/30/2012" This was a great beach find! I could not put it down. Now I've gone out and found all of his books and started at the beginning. "
— Lara, 6/6/2012" I had't heard too much about this book in the series, and was very pleasantly surprised. It had a different vibe from Gone, Baby Gone and others in the series. Very enjoyable, though it was a bit strung along towards the end. Definitely a great series. "
— Du, 3/31/2012" Not the best of the series. which is disappointing. Love Mckenzie Angie and Bubba. This one lacked depth. "
— Trey, 11/7/2011" I absolutely love this series. highly recommended for those who love crime dramas. "
— Emily, 10/17/2011" kenzie, gennaro and bubba: they are at it again. They are on the trail of psycho killer that always stays one jump ahead of them. Major sluething on this one! New York Times called it "hardboiled shocker". "
— Richard, 10/6/2011" This is a good book, but it was my second Lehane novel and my first was Gone Baby Gone. Gone Baby Gone seems to transcend the mystery genre to become and great piece of literature that happens to involve a mystery. This is just a mystery. A good mystery, but nothing more. "
— Michael, 9/13/2011" Really different story line. A good mystery "
— Marge, 8/29/2011" The best book I have read this summer!!! "
— Ginny, 8/26/2011" An enjoyable fast reading book with settings in Boston, Plymouth, mentions JH, etc. Good book "
— Cathy, 8/23/2011" Good installation into the Kenzie and Gennaro series. Lots of unexpected twists and turns. I LOVE the peek into Bubba's life :) "
— Dianna, 8/17/2011" At first I thought this book was less inventive than some of the other ones, and actually, I may still think that, but I couldn't put it down in the last third. Yay for summer reading! "
— Molly, 8/8/2011" Great story with very appealing characters. "
