The master of the new noir, Dennis Lehane magnificently evokes the dignity and savagery of working-class Boston in this terrifying tale of darkness and redemption.

Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro's latest client is a prominent Boston psychiatrist running scared from a vengeful Irish mob. The private investigators know something about cold-blooded retribution. Born and bred on the mean streets of blue-collar Dorchester, they've seen the darkness that lives in the hearts of the unfortunate. But an evil for which even they are unprepared is about to strike as secrets long-dormant erupt, setting off a chain of violent murders that will stain everything—including the truth.

    Publishers Weekly (starred review)

  • “An explosive story that is at once gut-wrenchingly violent and achingly melancholy…Lehane’s perfectly crafted plot leers, teases, taunts, and lulls, scattering bits of humor and heartbreak among the soul-chilling episodes of death and destruction. A tour de force from a truly gifted writer.”

" 3-1/2 stars... Dark, intense, brutal. A few I-saw-it-coming scenes, but overall chilling and suspenseful. Lehane's a great writer and I'll definitely read more of his books, but after this and Shutter Island back-to-back, I need a sanity break. "

" Very satisfying read. Lehane's fast becoming my go to guy for mystery/suspense. I do seem to keep picking up books in this series out of order though. Hasn't really been an issue, which in itself is a nice change from a lot of series. "

" A dark book. I always had a sense of foreboding, but I just couldn't put it down. He makes you care so much about his characters. I may wait awhile, but I definitely plan to read the rest of the series. "

" This novel is in my top five mysteries. Most people will know Dennis Lehane from movies like Shutter Island, Mystic River, and Gone, Baby, Gone. This was his second novel in a series. Be warned this book is pure awesomeness. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 James | 1/12/2014

" I liked this book better than the first one. It was definitely darker and much more suspenseful. Really well written with great character development. I loved how the childhood of the characters plays into each of these first two novels. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Susie | 1/8/2014

" Another great book by Dennis Lehane. I'm slowly working my way through this series, and I'm never let down. I stayed up way past my bedtime reading the last 150 pages of this one in one sitting, because there was just so much happening, and I had to see how it turned out. He's such a great writer. As always, I highly recommend any of his books. If you're going to read anything in this series, read the whole series. It's worth it. "

" A smashing sophomore effort by Lehane. It would have been exceedingly difficult to top A Drink Before The War, but Lehane meets and surpasses his own bar of excellence with a detective story that is complex, compelling, spellbinding, and NOT for the squeamish. I highly recommend it. "
