Publisher Description

The New York Times bestselling novel from Dennis Lehane is a gripping, unnerving psychological thriller about the effects of a savage killing on three former friends in a tightly knit, blue-collar Boston neighborhood.

When they were children, Sean Devine, Jimmy Marcus, and Dave Boyle were friends. But then a strange car pulled up to their street. One boy got into the car, two did not, and something terrible happened -- something that ended their friendship and changed all three boys forever.

Twenty-five years later, Sean is a homicide detective. Jimmy is an ex-con who owns a corner store. And Dave is trying to hold his marriage together and keep his demons at bay -- demons that urge him to do terrible things. When Jimmy's daughter is found murdered, Sean is assigned to the case. His investigation brings him into conflict with Jimmy, who finds his old criminal impulses tempt him to solve the crime with brutal justice. And then there is Dave, who came home the night Jimmy's daughter died covered in someone else's blood.

A tense and unnerving psychological thriller, Mystic River is also an epic novel of love and loyalty, faith and family, in which people irrevocably marked by the past find themselves on a collision course with the darkest truths of their own hidden selves.

"Fantastic book! It is terribly sad, but a good kind of sad, if that makes sense. The book was written with such an emotional accuracy it is almost disturbing. It was as if the writer had crawled into my own brain and plucked some of those thoughts out and wrote them down. I found myself with goosbumps all over and crying while reading. This book was written with a very skilled hand. I can't say much about it without giving away the story line and of course many have seen the movie, which was a great movie, but the book?! WOW. Incredible read!"

" such a sad and painful book - and the film was really true to it and so well -acted although obviously a book is more atmospheric "

" Picked this up as a light mystery read. Was so pleasantly surprised by how well written it is and what a great story (even having seen the movie and knowing the plot in advance). So I had to watch the movie again and realize again how great it was (and is). I am a huge Clint Eastwood fan. He and Hemingway would have been great pals! "

" So I saw the movie of the book when it came out, and was really impressed by it. Turns out it's extremely faithful to the original; although I only saw the film once and it was about ten years ago, I could visualize the scenes with Kevin Bacon et al very vividly. I think both film and book are excellent versions of what they intend to be. "

" A gripping, gut-wrenching story featuring complex (and very believable) characters, edge-of-your-seat writing, and resonant with the truth of its message: things are not always as they seem. Be absolutely certain before you do something that is irreversible. Great writing. Could not put it down. "

" The book did a lot of things right. Kept you turning pages, kept you guessing and had a bunch of twists (which didn't all flow for me, but were close enough for me to accept it and move on.) It's a book well worth reading, but not quite one for my keeper shelf. It's a genre book done well. "
