From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson, the Mistborn series is a heist story of political intrigue and magical, martial-arts action. For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison. Kelsier "snapped" and found in himself the powers of a Mistborn. A brilliant thief and natural leader, he turned his talents to the ultimate caper, with the Lord Ruler himself as the mark. Kelsier recruited the underworld's elite, the smartest and most trustworthy allomancers, each of whom shares one of his many powers, and all of whom relish a high-stakes challenge. Only then does he reveal his ultimate dream, not just the greatest heist in history, but the downfall of the divine despot. But even with the best criminal crew ever assembled, Kel's plan looks more like the ultimate long shot, until luck brings a ragged girl named Vin into his life. Like him, she's a half-Skaa orphan, but she's lived a much harsher life. Vin has learned to expect betrayal from everyone she meets, and gotten it. She will have to learn to trust, if Kel is to help her master powers of which she never dreamed. This saga dares to ask a simple question: What if the hero of prophecy fails? "Wow. I don't know how Sanderson so immediately and thoroughly burns metal and you are suddenly in his world. He doesn't explain the rules of his universe until they come up, so you're on edge, waiting, but in the meantime, it's all real and fleshed out. LONG. I do think there could be some editing. But it's just a lovely piece of work and such and amazing ending. Usually, you come down to the big conflict and you just know everyone will win and that takes the edge off the tension. But with Mistborn, I knew there were volumes to come and so many bad things had happened already. The main male character is dead by this point, for heaven's sake. So when they really did "win," you found yourself looking for "where's the catch?" And of, course, I'm sure it will come in book 2. This is a real accomplishment!"

“The fast-paced action scenes temper Vin’s interminable ballroom intrigues, while the characters…profoundly drawn, have a raw stereotypic appeal.”
— Publishers Weekly“The characters in this book are amazingly believable. Vin is an eminently sympathetic protagonist whose development over the course of the book is beautifully and realistically delineated. The system of magic is exceedingly clever and well-integrated into the complex and plausible world that Vin and Kelsier inhabit. While this is the first in a series, it’s an exceedingly satisfying book on its own, and fans of the genre should waste no time picking it up.”
— RT Book Reviews (4½ gold stars, Top Pick!)“Intrigue, politics, and conspiracies mesh complexly in a world Sanderson realizes in satisfying depth and peoples with impressive characters.”
— Booklist“Sanderson's popularity as a fantasy writer is being matched by the reception to his audiobooks. As depicted by the skillful Michael Kramer, the world of Mistborn becomes concrete and tangible.
— AudioFileMichael Kramer...does a fantastic job of giving voice to the characters and describing the land in beautiful detail. The vocal range and emotional range of his reading was excellent.... By far my favorite voice in the book is that of Breeze and in the following novels he becomes one of my favorite characters simply because Michael Kramer's vocalization is so spot on that the character literally seems to come alive.

— Booklist on MistbornEnjoyable, adventurous read that. . .should satisfy even easily-bored teens.
— Locus on MistbornA fascinating world . . . one that deserves a sequel.
— The Washington Post on Mistborn" Great way of exploring a new area of magic and fantasy. I went from the Lughtbringer Series to this and it expanded a new region in to the possibilities of what magic can do. "
— Dayton, 5/15/2017" Engageing, exciting, interessting "
— Hege, 2/2/2014" Pretty good. Enjoyed it very much. "
— Jakko, 1/31/2014" I really wanted to like this as I haven't found a sci-fi/fantasy series in a long time that I really enjoyed. I just couldn't get into it. "
— Rachel, 12/30/2013" I think I would have rated this higher if I had read it before The Way of Kings. Still, a very entertaining book. Onwards to book two! "
— Matthew, 12/28/2013" Just epic. "
— Miraj, 12/19/2013" I found it very hard to read, but thoroughly enjoyed having done so. The story is often bleak but the fantasy 'science' is consistent throughout and remains new throughout. Well worth reading! "
— Trevor, 11/25/2013" Interesting ideas, quite enjoyable "
— Alan, 11/19/2013" Slow to start off with but got better loved it "
— Samantha, 11/16/2013" Aha! Done with Sanderson's "The Final Empire" in a week... Can't wait to read the sequel, though the book could stand on its own! :-) "
— Jerricho, 11/13/2013" Honestly, I couldn't get past the first 5-6 chapters. The system of magic is really interesting, but the characters just aren't compelling enough for me to keep reading. Even though the magic system is interesting, I was bored stiff reading about the characters using it. "
— Michael, 11/9/2013" Surprisingly better than I expected. Interesting magic and worldbuilding lead to a very well constructed trilogy. "
— Morgan, 10/15/2013" Once I started reading I had a hard time stopping. This was one out of three books. The character build is fantastic. You really get to know the character and what makes them tick. "
— Kat, 10/8/2013" Amazing book. I really love it! "
— Katherine, 8/1/2013" I really like Sanderson's books. His ideas are different enough to make the books feel fresh in a market that is saturated with fantasy trilogies. His characters are believable, his backgrounds are solid and his narration is a pleasure. "
— Jay, 7/5/2013" FANTASTIC! What a fine read! I am not a big Fantasy fan but this book blew my mind. Brandon Sanderson is my new Favorite Author. "
— Ajay, 7/23/2012" I will read any book by Brandon Sanderson (am sad that I've now read all of them and have to wait for more). His worlds, plots, and characters are believable and interesting, and I always want to know what is going to happen next! "
— Dwheeler11, 3/24/2012" Wonderful book... it built up steam as it went along, leaving me wanting more by the last page! Masterfully done, Mr. Sanderson! "
— Brian, 1/3/2012" The writing was great but the premise is just really dumb (people drink and then metabolize metals to get super powers ). I couldn't waste any more time on it. "
— Esherlock, 11/7/2011" I read this series last year and REALLY enjoyed it. "
— Dan, 6/29/2011" Sanderson is a great action writer. I certainly wouldn't go into this expecting artful writing or particularly interesting use of language, but Mistborn is a perfectly satisfying book for a well paced action fantasy. "
— Allison, 6/27/2011" Fun characters awesome magic system. The epic beginning to an epic series. <br/> "
— Roy, 6/21/2011" I am really liking this. It is an entirely new (to me) magical world. It is violent however. I have to admit I tend to skim over the fights which are somewhat lengthy, detailed, and, as mentioned, violent... "
— Monica, 6/18/2011" Liked it, but thought that the characterization was a bit thin. "
— Matthew, 6/15/2011" Might just be my favorite book ever. "
— Adria, 6/14/2011" Recommend-recommend-recommend. Best fantasy I've read in years. "
— Emma, 6/14/2011" This is a great series! The character development is excellent. I love the relationships between the characters. The writing is fantastic. I'm not typically into fantasy books, but this is a must read. "
— Heidi, 6/13/2011" This is the 1st book to the series and it is amazing. I love the characters and the adventure that they go on. I wasn't to sure about the book but once I started I couldn't put it down I would start it in the morning and Id be up the entire night finishing the book so I could start the next one! "
