From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Great Alone comes an incandescent story about the resilience of the human spirit, the triumph of hope, and the meaning of home.
In the rugged Pacific Northwest lies the Olympic National Forest—nearly a million acres of impenetrable darkness and impossible beauty. From deep within this old growth forest, a six-year-old girl appears. Speechless and alone, she offers no clue as to her identity, no hint of her past.
Having retreated to her western Washington hometown after a scandal left her career in ruins, child psychiatrist Dr. Julia Cates is determined to free the extraordinary little girl she calls Alice from a prison of unimaginable fear and isolation. To reach her, Julia must discover the truth about Alice’s past—although doing so requires help from Julia’s estranged sister, a local police officer. The shocking facts of Alice’s life test the limits of Julia’s faith and strength, even as she struggles to make a home for Alice—and for herself.

"I always enjoy Kristen Hannah's writing style. Her readers are carried inside the lives of her everyday characters without being dragged through a lot of maudlin melodrama. This book was no exception. A child psychologist is called home to a small Washington Coastal town bordering the Olympic Rain Forrest when a seemingly ferrel child with a wolf pup appears in a tree in the center of town. From there an engaging story unfolds with moments of laughter and moments of tears. If you like women's fiction, this is a good one."

— Kathy, 2/15/2014" Great book! Everyone should read it. "
— Bridget, 2/15/2014" A story of a very lost soul and the deepest, healing love that only a mother can give. Another great read that tugs at your heart strings and leaves you haunted by the characters involved. When I go tot the end, I wished for more and still miss the characters. Feral children have existed throughout time. Here is one you will fall in love with and never forget. "
— Susan, 2/11/2014" A touching story. Another tearjerker for me. "
— Robyn, 2/5/2014" I liked this book but then I like Hannah's writing. It was one that evoked emotion which I consider a good book. The story centers around a "wild child" that comes into the lives of a small town and how she is brought back so to speak but even more it is about the changes in all those around her as they relate to and begin to love her. "
— Chris, 2/3/2014" Good beach read...especially if you like reading about the unreachable child. "
— Lauren, 1/27/2014" I was entranced by the story and devoured it in a day. A bit heartbreaking and a bit hopeful at the same time. "
— Heidi, 1/18/2014" Set in the rugged Olympic Forest of the Pacific Northwest, I was moved by this book of beloved characters that deliver a story about the resilience of the human spirit, the triumph of hope and the meaning of home. "
— Carol, 1/4/2014" I love Kristin Hannah. She is the mistress of the tearjerker... this book is beautifully heartbreaking and wonderfully heartwarming. It is a story of finding oneself and finding common ground. I absolutely loved it. "
— Lucie, 1/3/2014" Wow - sob in bed read. "Wild" child discovered in small Washington town. Child psychiatrist with issues is the only one who can help - and gets helped in the process. Good easy quick read. "
