It is the cusp of World War I. The Austro-Hungarians and Germans have their Clankers, steam-driven iron machines loaded with guns and ammunition. The British Darwinists employ genetically fabricated animals as their weaponry. Their Leviathan is a whale airship, and the most masterful beast in the British fleet.
Aleksandar Ferdinand, a Clanker, and Deryn Sharp, a Darwinist, are on opposite sides of the war. But their paths cross in the most unexpected way, taking them both aboard the Leviathan on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure….One that will change both their lives forever.

"I didn't like the beginning of the book, because it was too machiney. But in the middle of the book, I actually really enjoyed it. The best bit for me was when Deryn and Alek met.It ended in a way that made you want to read the second installment in the trilogy, which is what I am about to read."

“A tightly paced young adult novel set in an alternate version of the First World War and a welcome addition to the steampunk genre…The Darwinist and Clanker jargon crackles with an authentically techie feel.”
— New York Times“Westerfeld steadily builds a world that we soon accept as totally real and palpable. His inventiveness with the details of the competing imaginary technologies renders the rival paradigms sharp and bristly, with the complex stakes involved plain to see.”
— Barnes & Noble, editorial review“Gripping…The author’s fully realized world has an inventive lexicon to match—readers will be eager for the sequels.”
— Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Westerfeld’s brilliantly constructed imaginary world will capture readers from the first page. Full of nonstop action, this steampunk adventure is sure to become a classic.”
— School Library Journal" LOVE IT!!!!! Can't wait to read the sequel! "
— Clara, 2/4/2014" It took me a bit to get into this one because I really didn't like Alek at first. Deryn's story kept me going though, and I'm glad it did. I ended up really enjoying this book. It's historical fiction, but set in an alternate universe, which was very cool. I recognized a lot of what was going on, but much was new. It was a very fun read and I can't wait to pick up the sequel! (Also, Scott Westerfeld is a Vassar grad, so woo!) "

— Tina, 9/29/2013" Great Steam Punk Love how it took the actual events leading up to WWI and ran with it. Darwinists vs Clankers I'd go with the Darwinists "
— John, 7/25/2013" Very wannabe steampunk fantasy blah. A friend gave me this book, but I wouldn't have purchased it for myself. It could have been fun, but it's just very middle school reading level. "

— Kimberly, 5/23/2011" First off I am NOT a steam punk fan but I am a crazy Scott Westerfeld fan girl so I thought I'd try it out. It was painful to get through. The plot was interesting enough really just not my cup of tea. It also unlike his other books, seems aimed at a much younger audience. "
