Publisher Description

The quiet scandal surrounding her parents’ deaths has always haunted Beryl Tavistock. Now she’s asking dangerous questions, and the answers are proving that the past does not die easily. Pulled into a world of espionage, Beryl quickly discovers that she needs help, and suave former CIA agent Richard Wolf is her only hope. But in a world where trust is a double-edged sword, friends can become enemies, and enemies can be killers.

"Gerritsen weaves a tale of Transcontinental espionage when a 20-year-old murder/suicide among spies case is reinvestigated by the victims' children. The Tavistock brother and sister find themselves the target of a hit as they try to prove their parents were murdered and neither was a cheat or dirty spy. This being one of Gerritsen's early works, it contains fewer descriptive crime scenes and more romance than her more recent books, when an ex-CIA-hunk is in charge of protecting Beryl Tavistock. Suspicions run high in this story, as much is not what it seems to be."

" I bought this book having enjoyed The Surgeon and The Apprentice. I was deeply disappointed with this novel, it felt amateurish and as though the uthiur had taken a step backwards in her writing ability. When I checked the copyright date and saw it was 1994 and published by Harlequin I began to understand why it felt so strange. This was clearly marketed in the bookshop as a new novel and it does no long term good to the author to have old works repackaged and presented as new. "

" A short and quick read, that was suspenseful from the start. However it started to die a bit at the end. It was the first book I read by Tess Gerritsen. I want to read some more of her works. "

" This book was recommended to me because my friend knows how much I love the Rizzoli & Isles series...this book is clearly one of Ms. Gerritsen's early works...too much fluff & not enough intrigue "

" This book is a mixture of mystery and spy stories. Beryl's parents were spies who were murdered twenty years ago when she was a child. After a family secret is revealed at a dinner party, Beryl returns to the scene of the crime to prove that her father did not murder her mother because she was having an affair. Beryl gets help from ex-CIA agent, Richard Wolf, but she can't ignore the attraction she feels to him. Meanwhile, her life as well as her brother's life is in constant danger from someone who does not want the truth revealed. "

" I love Tess Gerrisen's books and especially love her Rizzoli and Isles series. I decided I wanted to read some of her earlier works and stumbles across this on Amazon and read it on my Kindle. I liked the stories, but they just aren't as good as her more recent books. "
