Barbara Holloway is a low-key attorney in Eugene, Oregon, who left her father’s high-powered firm to handle small legal problems for local residents and ponder her next move. But while trying to sort out her own future, two people, desperate for help, show up on her doorstep: former pro football player Martin Owens and his wife, Binnie. Binnie, who is mute, met her husband when she sneaked aboard his boat while it was docked in Haiti and smuggled herself into the US. Now Immigration is seeking to deport her back to Haiti, which would be a death sentence. Born to a woman from Belize who was kidnapped and enslaved by pirates, Binnie’s only hope is to prove her and her mother’s real identity. With only days to find the truth and protect Binnie, Holloway sets off for Belize. But what she knows is only the tip of the iceberg in what turns out to be one of her most complex, compelling, and dangerous cases yet.

"Another excellent, defense attorney Barbara Holloway book. This is one of my favorite lawyer series and this installment did not disappoint. Although this one wasn't very "lawyery" (no court room scenes, etc) it was an action packed thriller for sure. "

“MacDuffie effortlessly portrays a cast of native and non-native English speakers—an ex-NFL player, a retired Hollywood producer, a homicidal drug lord, and legitimate and illegitimate immigration and drug enforcement operatives. Binnie Owens, a deaf, nonverbal young woman who is fleeing slavery in Haiti, is at the center of the plot. MacDuffie’s impeccable pauses bring to life in audio format a character who speaks with her hands. Amazing!”
— AudioFile“Barbara finds mystery, danger, and intrigue…Barbara is a compelling character—intelligent and capable yet vulnerable enough for readers to worry about the danger she encounters.”
— Booklist“A deportation proceeding…plunges Oregon attorney Barbara Holloway into kidnapping, murder, and other high crimes and misdemeanors…A book that includes sex, drugs, piracy, a homicidally dysfunctional family, official corruption on two continents, and a rousing finale that will bring all your moral self-righteousness to the surface.”
— Kirkus Reviews“Intense and frightening…A finely plotted mystery wrapped in a human-rights tragedy that will keep readers guessing as they try to figure out the culprits.”
— RT Book Reviews (4 stars)" Illegal in US woman from Belize in danger for her life. "
— Janet, 2/11/2014" I liked this book but was confused with how it fit in with the other Barbara Holloway books I read in the past. This book is obviously an early story even though it was published in 2011. Once you figure this out the story is a good one. "
— Melissa, 2/10/2014" A trip to Belize to help a mute women immigrated illegally but born to an American father gets Barbara Holloway out of her funk. An early book. "
— Gwen, 1/31/2014" Probably three and a half stars is more like it. My first Kate Wilhelm book and I may well read another. This was a good quick read. I liked the character of Barbara and her concern despite herself for Martin and Binnie. It's interesting the way she dashes off arrow prayers and she throws herself into danger for others. As one who adores orchids, the desciption of the orchids really appealed to me and the descriptions of Belize which meant nothing to me before this book.I admit I am always a sucker for books and TV shows about the law and llaywyers. "
— Dale, 1/29/2014" Another excellent, defense attorney Barbara Holloway book. This is one of my favorite lawyer series and this installment did not disappoint. Although this one wasn't very "lawyery" (no court room scenes, etc) it was an action packed thriller for sure. "
— Jan, 1/20/2014" I enjoy the Holloway series. They are well written and suspenseful. "
— Joggingt, 1/16/2014" I have loved the Barbara Holloway series and this one topped them all! A great read that I couldn't put down. "
— Elizabeth, 12/24/2013" Another great Barbara Holloway novel. Has just enough drama to keep the story going while Barbara is still her elegant flamboyant lawyer self. "
— Rosemary, 12/23/2013" Love, love, love Kate Wilhelm; especially her Barbara Holloway series. Have read all 12 and enjoyed each one. "
— Sharon, 12/3/2013" Not the best entry in the series by far. "
— Diane, 11/21/2013" I enjoyed this book, but it was not my favorite of Whilhem's Barbara Holloway novels. It took some time to get into the plot and I didn't like that it was set more in the past than other more recent Barbara Holloway novels. "
— Michelle, 5/31/2013" I was a little dismayed at first because this is a prequel--it fits in chronologically between book 1 and book 2. However, it was still the suspenseful, complex, and well-written Holloway that I've come to love. "
— Jessie, 4/24/2013" Kate Wilhelm is not effusive, but she spins a good yarn, full of atmosphere. "
— Carrieuoregon, 3/13/2013" Kate Wilhelm writes some of the best in the mystery genre. "
— Rrshively, 10/10/2012" The writing is pedestrian, but the setting--Belize--piqued my interest enough to finish this. "
— Kay, 3/8/2012" One of the characters in this book is named Dennis Linfield. This is funny because Linfield is the college I attended in McMinnville which is not a really long distance from Eugene. "
— Francie, 12/2/2011" Too short but I really like all of the Barbara Holloway books! Dithered between 3 and 4 stars. T'was hard to decide. So REALLY HIGH three...just 'cause it could have been more....(IMHO) :-) "
— Barbara, 9/12/2011" A bit briefer than usual but interesting plot "
— Dorinda, 7/13/2011" Good suspense book. Enjoyed listening to it. "
— Susan, 7/5/2011" Good; Continuing character: Barbara Holloway; when a former NFL football player and his mute wife show up at her office, Holloway has no idea it will turn into a battle with immigration, drug lords, and secret government operatives "
— Joe, 7/1/2011" Kate Wilhelm is new to me, and reminiscent of Sue Grafton, whom I much enjoy. Well crafted whodunnit with engaging characters. This is the 12th in the series, and I will look for others. "
— Kathy, 5/27/2011" I liked this book but was confused with how it fit in with the other Barbara Holloway books I read in the past. This book is obviously an early story even though it was published in 2011. Once you figure this out the story is a good one. "
