Controversial author and scholar David Etheridge is not the kind of company an aspiring politician wants to keep. But ambitious senator Robert McCrutchen has a history with Etheridge that he’s desperately trying to keep under wraps. Twenty-two years ago, both men were investigated in the death of a young coed, but the case was never solved.
When Etheridge returns to Eugene, Oregon, McCrutchen is his grudging host—until the senator is found shot dead. Now, Etheridge is once again suspected of murder, only this time, with the cold case reopened, he’s facing a double charge. Attorney Barbara Holloway must battle both the prosecution and the court of public opinion, which has already tried and convicted Etheridge for both murders. As the pressure mounts, Barbara ties the past and present together, risking her own life to preserve justice.

"I think I must be inside Kate Wilhem's head because I had the killer figured out right away and was waiting to find out why. Glad that Darren was in the book more, as well as Todd. They help to add to the story. Poor Bailey, he will probably ask for a bonus ;-) Maybe Frank will gain a friend....."

“Carrington MacDuffie has an interesting voice that is perfect for the determined defense lawyer, her cagey and old-fashioned father, the acerbic David, and the lesser characters who complete this engaging mystery.”
— AudioFile" A good mystery set in the pacific northwest. It follows an attorney, Barbara, as she tries to identify the real perpetrator before her client goes on trial for a 20-some-year-old murder of his childhood friend. "
— Jess, 2/7/2014" Twists and turns all along the way. Relevant and real characters and the bad guys get their just deserts--very satisfying Saturday read. "
— Brenda, 1/31/2014" The story started out great but it started to drag in the middle. The ending was just ok. It was kind of predictable though. "
— Mischelle, 1/19/2014" This was a pretty good who-done-it, with just enough suspense and surprises. Although there were clues sprinkled through-out, it was never obvious what had really happened. The characters were well-written, warm and genuine. It was an interesting plot and the dialog helped move the story along. I'll definitely read more Wilhelm books. "
— Jill, 1/13/2014" To quote Jamie, a good airplane read as you wouldn't care if you left it behind. Definitely not a memorable read and I'd only read it if you have nothing else to read. It's better than many books as it is pretty well written, but not gripping in any way, shape or form. "
— Linde, 1/11/2014" Somewhat predictable, but not in a bad way. Interesting mystery read with great twists. "
— Kalei, 12/29/2013" I solved this one less than half way through. "
— April, 12/15/2013" I enjoy this series of Barbara Holloway legal thrillers by kate Wilhelm. The characters are believable and interesting. This story kept my interest with lots of twists and turns in the plot. "
— Barbara, 12/9/2013" New author that I really enjoy. "
— Suzanne, 11/23/2013" Her books are always interesting. With this particular book, I knew within 1/4 of reading who the killer was and why they did it. Granted he wasn't even mentioned very much, but it just made sense! I like her books and would recommend them to anyone who likes legal thrillers. "
— Brittany, 8/12/2013" Interesting story and a pretty good twist. "
— Scott, 5/25/2013" Must've been okay but I don't remember it already so...what does that tell ya? "
— Christina, 8/19/2012" I've read other books by Kate Wilhelm and liked them. I think that the problem with this one was that I figured out the ending in the first fourth of the book and became irritated when the main characters couldn't see what was going on. At best, a beach read. "
— Judy, 5/31/2012" Another good Barbara Holloway mystery... "
— Kathy, 9/5/2011" There were a lot of characters introduced within the first bit of the book which was a bit confusing. A pleasant read, but not great. "
— Helgaklassen, 7/6/2011" Enjoyable double murder mystery - one in the past & one in the present. I loved that it was set in Eugene, OR and mentioned the Hult Center, as well as going up to Portland & down to Ashland! "
— Debbie, 7/3/2011" This is perhaps more of a 3 1/2 stars since it was a bit more politically correct than I might have liked. Nonetheless, it was a really good mystery and I liked it as much as all of the other Barbara Halloway books. Good plot, lots to figure out and a satisfying ending. "
— Linda, 2/17/2011" I enjoyed this, it's been a while since I read any of these Barbara Holloway novels. "
— Carol, 1/21/2011" This is perhaps more of a 3 1/2 stars since it was a bit more politically correct than I might have liked. Nonetheless, it was a really good mystery and I liked it as much as all of the other Barbara Halloway books. Good plot, lots to figure out and a satisfying ending. "
— Linda, 12/16/2010" This was the first Barbara Holloway book I read, and of course it was one of the newer titles. I've gone back and read all of the other books. Good characters, nice twists and good endings - I like this series. "
— Tracy, 9/13/2010" This was a fun mystery to listen to, although I think it dragged out a bit too long after the mystery fell into place for the listener/reader. "
— Addie, 8/7/2010" I figured out who did it before the end. :( "
— Amy, 7/15/2010" An entertaining mystery. Listened on my MP3 player while walking, ironing(not that often!) or driving. "
— Linda, 1/1/2010" The story started out great but it started to drag in the middle. The ending was just ok. It was kind of predictable though. "
— Mischelle, 9/29/2009" Enjoyable double murder mystery - one in the past & one in the present. I loved that it was set in Eugene, OR and mentioned the Hult Center, as well as going up to Portland & down to Ashland! "
— Debbie, 9/27/2009" Legal Fiction <br/>2 murders and a third one attempted over the span of 22 years. Are they connected? It's up to Barbara Holloway to find out - and to keep her famous author client out of jail. "
— Anne, 9/21/2009" I started reading this series accidentally in the middle, so I keep getting each new one and am trying to go backwards too. I like Barbara and her Father as well as their “family”. I also enjoyed this client and his story. "
— Lavendersbluegreen, 9/12/2009" She's always fun to read, but after 10, the characters do get a bit predictable. The cases and legal procedures are interesting, though. "
