Publisher Description

Controversial author and scholar David Etheridge is not the kind of company an aspiring politician wants to keep. But ambitious senator Robert McCrutchen has a history with Etheridge that he’s desperately trying to keep under wraps. Twenty-two years ago, both men were investigated in the death of a young coed, but the case was never solved.

When Etheridge returns to Eugene, Oregon, McCrutchen is his grudging host—until the senator is found shot dead. Now, Etheridge is once again suspected of murder, only this time, with the cold case reopened, he’s facing a double charge. Attorney Barbara Holloway must battle both the prosecution and the court of public opinion, which has already tried and convicted Etheridge for both murders. As the pressure mounts, Barbara ties the past and present together, risking her own life to preserve justice.

"I think I must be inside Kate Wilhem's head because I had the killer figured out right away and was waiting to find out why. Glad that Darren was in the book more, as well as Todd. They help to add to the story. Poor Bailey, he will probably ask for a bonus ;-) Maybe Frank will gain a friend....."

Quotes

  • “Carrington MacDuffie has an interesting voice that is perfect for the determined defense lawyer, her cagey and old-fashioned father, the acerbic David, and the lesser characters who complete this engaging mystery.”

" A good mystery set in the pacific northwest. It follows an attorney, Barbara, as she tries to identify the real perpetrator before her client goes on trial for a 20-some-year-old murder of his childhood friend. "

" This was a pretty good who-done-it, with just enough suspense and surprises. Although there were clues sprinkled through-out, it was never obvious what had really happened. The characters were well-written, warm and genuine. It was an interesting plot and the dialog helped move the story along. I'll definitely read more Wilhelm books. "

" To quote Jamie, a good airplane read as you wouldn't care if you left it behind. Definitely not a memorable read and I'd only read it if you have nothing else to read. It's better than many books as it is pretty well written, but not gripping in any way, shape or form. "

" Her books are always interesting. With this particular book, I knew within 1/4 of reading who the killer was and why they did it. Granted he wasn't even mentioned very much, but it just made sense! I like her books and would recommend them to anyone who likes legal thrillers. "

" I've read other books by Kate Wilhelm and liked them. I think that the problem with this one was that I figured out the ending in the first fourth of the book and became irritated when the main characters couldn't see what was going on. At best, a beach read. "
