Publisher Description

Rich in suspense and brimming with adventure, the New York Times-bestselling Underland Chronicles unfold the fate of the Underland and the great warrior, Gregor. Suzanne Collins is also the author of the bestselling Hunger Games trilogy.

When eleven-year-old Gregor follows his little sister through a grate in the laundry room of their New York apartment, he hurtles into the dark Underland beneath the city. There, humans live uneasily beside giant spiders, bats, cockroaches, and rats--but the fragile peace is about to fall apart.

Gregor wants no part of a conflict between these creepy creatures. He just wants to find his way home. But when he discovers that a strange prophecy foretells a role for him in the Underland's uncertain future, he realizes it might be the only way to solve the biggest mystery of his life. Little does he know his quest will change him and the Underland forever.

Rich in suspense and brimming with adventure, Suzanne Collin's debut marked a thrilling new talent, and introduced a character no young reader will ever forget.

"This was a really fantastic read! Not at all what I was expecting (I guess Kafka was flavoring my expectations a bit, because I totally thought Gregor was a giant bug, for some reason--he's not). Gregor is an eleven-year-old boy expecting to have to endure a boring summer taking care of his two-year-old sister, Boots, when they fall through a grate in their laundry room and find themselves in the Underland, where a mysterious prophecy seems to expect more from Gregor than he thinks he can deliver. This was a very fast-paced book. I easily could have read it in one sitting, if time had allowed. Boots is hilarious, and Gregor's patient interactions with her were some of my favorite parts of the book. I can't wait to finish the rest of the books I have to read for class so that I can get started on the rest of this series!"

" I have to admit I was skeptical at first because I thought it was a little too young for me but I ended up really loving this book. It probably helps that I like fantasy. Gregor was a great protagonist and the Underland was fascinating. Collins kept me believing the whole time, she rarely strayed from the confines of her fantasy world. I definitely want to finish the series. "

" A lot of creepy things like bats, cockroaches and spiders combined with "epic" battles might make this an appealing book for boys. Gregor falls down a hole in his basement (for hours) and softly lands in an enormous underground world where animals talk and people are nearly translucent. Not my cup of tea, but like I said. . . boys might like it. "

About Suzanne Collins

Suzanne Collins first made her mark in children’s literature with the New York Times bestselling Underland Chronicles series for middle-grade readers. Her debut for slightly older readers, The Hunger Games, immediately became a New York Times bestseller, appealing to both teen readers and adults. It was called “addictive” by Stephen King in Entertainment Weekly and “amazing” by Stephenie Meyer on her website and was named a New York Times Notable Book of 2008 and a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice. It is now a major motion picture as well. The other two books in the trilogy, Catching Fire and Mockingjay, also enjoyed enormous success. In April 2010, Collins was named to the Time 100 list of “the world’s most influential people.” Collins has also had a successful and prolific career writing for children’s television. She has worked on the staffs of several Nickelodeon shows, including the Emmy-nominated hit Clarissa Explains It All and The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo.
