"I really enjoyed Frankenstein. This book was a reminder to me about social acceptance, friendship, emotion, and desire. The novel is based on a "monster" created by different body parts and organs of the dead and once this monster comes to life it seeks companionship but is rejected by everyone and feared of. I really enjoyed this book because it was mysterious and had the one theme I absolutely adore in a story as well as many others I am sure. That theme is love. Any story with emotion like someone seeking for love or acceptance automatically gets me attached and tied to a novel. Frankenstein was able to reach out to my emotions throughout the entire novel even though he was created by Victor Frankenstein in a lab though I still had a feeling throughout the entire novel as if he was someone real. The ending disappointed me a bit after being so emotionally attached to the characters in the novel but I recommend this book to anyone because it is really interesting and a classic that must be read by everyone in my opinion."
— Eden (4 out of 5 stars)
“It is a mistake to read Frankenstein as a modern novel of psychological realism…Where Dracula and other conventional Gothic works are fantasies, with clear links to fairly tales and legends, and even popular ballads, Frankenstein has the theoretical and cautionary tone of science fiction.”
— Joyce Carol Oates“The quest of a solitary and ravaged consciousness first for consolation, then for revenge, and finally for a self-destruction that will be apocalyptic, that will bring down the creator with his creature.”
— Harold Bloom“A subtle and ironic prophecy that raises the question of who exactly is the real monster in this story.”
— Jesse Larsen, 500 Great Books by women“As a novel, Frankenstein…is a work that offers us a powerful and enduring vision. Surely genius was required for that.”
— Leonard Wolf" beautiful narration well paced the poetry of Shelly's writings sublime in human relationships "
— roderick, 9/12/2017" I could go into such depth with analysis on this book - I loved it! "
— Emma-jane, 2/20/2014" Got bit lost reading this book at times but it definitely made my blood go cold! "
— Alex, 2/20/2014" The idea of this story was intresting, but i hate the Writing. "
— Rachel, 2/20/2014" I assigned this book to my senior English class so I thought that I'd better read it again. I'm so glad for the assignment and the reread. It's full of great questions and so pertinent in today's push of scientific limits/boundaries. "
— Cherrie, 2/20/2014" Had to read for English class. It was pretty good in the middle, but the beginning and end weren't so great! "
— Chloe, 2/19/2014" Classic that is continually misread and misrepresented in film. "
— James, 2/18/2014" Read this for Halloween. Eh. I'm glad literature has evolved. I was having problems with how the characters are motivated, and it was pretty slow in the beginning. Also, I believe there was a seven chapter monologue in the middle. From a monster who learned language and syntax from spying on an old man and his family. I just didn't buy it. But for it's time, I understand how it would've been an explosion of a new idea. "
— Heather, 2/18/2014" Listened to this book on tape. Like poetry. So beautifully written "
— Diana, 2/17/2014" her husband wrote it - lol "
— Erikka, 2/17/2014" This book was quite and enjoyment to me. From the beginning to the end it kept interested and entertained. Frankenstein's monster had my emotions all over the place. There were times when I felt sorry for him and times when I thought that he deserved to be alone. Victor on the other hand didn't get much pity from me. "
— Graciela, 2/17/2014" I didn't really care for this book. The character interactions are somewhat unrealistic and kept jarring me out of the story. The book is more about the Doctor than his Monster, but really, the Doctor is really kind of an uninteresting character. I guess that's why the movies all focus on the Monster :) "
— Charles, 2/16/2014" I liked it. At first it was difficult to embrace the old-fashioned language, but after a couple of chapters the story itself was very entertaining. I would recommend this to my friends. Definitely. "
— Jason, 2/16/2014" Last night I also finished Frankenstein which I LOVED. Unfortunately Pandora's Breeches had given me the basic story arc but it was still nice to see it played out. Having read that first it was also interesting to see the relationships between the men and their largely unseen female counterparts. THe plot was so unlike any hollywood production, so many extra characters, so much traveling and despair. I'm not really interested in ethics but I am really interested in psychology, what makes people people and how and why they behave. This book was just a fantastic enquiry into the nature of man. I found the writing to be beautifully articulate, I loved how eloquent everyone was, including the monster. For me it was a very visual book, I could picture the hovel cottage on the remote Scottish island, and the boat stuck in the ice. I can't believe that I waited so long to read it. I'm sure I'm going to end up reading it again several times. It was just really really good! "
— Mel, 2/16/2014" It had a lot of potential. I loved the changes in narrative perspective. But the writing was so unengaging and somewhat objective, like viewing the action through a distant, cloudy window. The action was too slow. "
— Ilona, 2/16/2014" I enjoyed Frankenstein. It's not an easy read but it's engrossing in an Ancient Mariner type of way. You have to read on to hear his tale whether you want to or not. I'd like to read this again sometime in the near future. "
— Anthony, 2/16/2014" I had to read this book for a course in biological themes in literature. The writing itself was interesting and kept my attention. What really struck me about this book is what it accomplished in its time period. A female writer who achieved arguably more success than her male writer husband was astounding for this time. In addition, the novel has stood the test of time to become a classic. While I disliked the way the characters behaved themselves much of the time, it was still a well put-together story and much better than the stereotype it received from the old monster movie. "
— Moose, 2/15/2014" Good book. I really enjoy how the author makes you sympathize with both the monster and his creator by showing flaws in both of their thinking. Well written and a delight to read, recommended for those who like literary books. "
— Bryan, 2/15/2014" A beautiful depiction of the Swiss landscape with a truly Gothic plot. A fantastic story, and rightly considered a classic. "
— James, 2/14/2014" The science behind this book is fascinating. Love the dive into the times and how it can so easily be a scenario for today. And no movie has done justice to this book, but the original one is closest. "
— Megan, 2/14/2014" I'm sorry but this book was so boring, and morbid and hard to understand. I did not like it. "
— Klaudia, 2/14/2014" This wasn't exactly what I expected, but It wasn't bad either. Nice story. Not really scary, just very sad. I was hoping that this would be more compelling book, but this just might be that I had too big expectations because of the classic status of this book. "
— Sofia, 2/14/2014" written for teens , like teens think, stupid "
— John, 2/14/2014" EPIC! ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS "
— Mario, 2/13/2014" I think people give this book a poor review because it is something they did not anticipate. Frankenstein is a beautiful example of the way people interact socially with each other based on physical appearances. It is a sad book, and as you read you begin to feel sympathy for Frankenstein's monster. Beautiful book. Shows that looks are not all that matters, it's what is on the inside. "
— Summer, 2/13/2014" Read it for my English class, I did not enjoy the book because of the missing gaps in the book. "
— Sierra, 2/13/2014" I love teaching this book! "
— Carrie, 2/13/2014" Interesting book but a little too childish, I mean, it is supposed to be "scary" but it's not at all and the plot isn't really elaborated... "
— Léa, 2/12/2014" didnt think i would like this so was pleasantly surprised how much i liked it "
— Renee, 2/12/2014" A book all my Honors' students at UMaine read and loved. Decided I should read it and I did enjoy it. "
— Mary, 2/11/2014" It took me 12 years to finally read this. And I can honestly say that it was worth the waiting. An exciting tale showing the monstrosities that humanity is perfectly able to commit, without one inch of remorse. A horror tale of the true kind. The monster within you will be on its guard. "
— Melusina, 2/11/2014" This book was amazing. It was exciting and it kept me on the edge of my seat and it was completely different then what I thought. My only complaint is that it was alittle but academic and a bit more dense then I usually read but it taught me new words and I liked having to really read it instead of skim it. I think the story is a huge parable as to why forgiveness is a better path then revenge. The bad blood between them both ended up ruining both of their existences. Great read. "
— Jordan, 2/10/2014" A classic that needs to be read ! "
— Dan, 2/9/2014" This book was ok, it wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. It wasn't what I expected because bits and pieces I've seen about Frankenstein from the movies and tv have deviated quite a bit from the book. Only a few parts kept me interested, it could've been better. "
— Julio, 2/9/2014" I thoroughly enjoy this book once I wrapped my head around the 19th century English. I enjoyed the way the tale was told - from the perspective of the doctor as told to Walton the captain. While you may want to keep dictionary.com handy it is worth the effort. It kept me engaged and anxious to read more. I enjoyed the discussions between the creator and the creation as thought provoking. "
— John, 2/6/2014" Mary Shelly - a literary genius - explores the relevant topic of man playing God in this short but captivating novel. Delving into the psychology "
— Max, 2/6/2014" A wonderful classic that I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed reading from an analytical POV, and loved writing essays on. It was heavy going at times, with intense, romantic descriptions of the landscape and Victor's emotional state and so it did take me a couple of weeks to finish as I read it in small bursts. But Shelley really shows her genius through her brilliant allusions and character construction in the book. "
— Jemma, 2/5/2014" I think people give this book a poor review because it is something they did not anticipate. Frankenstein is a beautiful example of the way people interact socially with each other based on physical appearances. It is a sad book, and as you read you begin to feel sympathy for Frankenstein's monster. Beautiful book. Shows that looks are not all that matters, it's what is on the inside. "
— Summer, 2/5/2014" I liked it; it was just my usual style. "
— XtîñÃ, 2/5/2014" Once again another book more or less ruined by school. It doesn't help that its very long and descriptive and high schoolers can easily lose focus. But the story itself is very interesting so check it out maybe. It's about monsters seeking revenge on its creator. Even though school ruined the vibe, it might still be a really fun read. "
— Cheyenne, 2/4/2014" you'll need some patience to enjoy this one. "
— Michael, 2/4/2014" I did not enjoy this. I like the story, but it was just soo hard for me to get through. I agree with the person that said, "reading this is like trying to swim in a pool of cement." "
— Alesia, 2/4/2014" Written with just as much melodrama as you'll see in every film adaptation, Shelly's novel is nonetheless still quite powerful. Frankenstein still allows parallels to be drawn with our times despite being originally published nearly 200 years ago. For all its symbolism it remains a very human story. "
— Matthew, 2/2/2014" Great food for thought. Is someone born evil? Or does some one become evil? Is society the creator of evil? How far is it too far to go with science? "
— Geraldine, 2/1/2014" My perception of the book came from the movies. I was so surprised at how much more the book is. I know books are better than movies but I don't think I've seen an adaptation that gives this book proper due. "
— Karen, 1/31/2014" My all time favorite book! "
— Nancy, 1/31/2014" Hollywood created a monster. This classic has little to do with the Frankenstein we all envision from movies and TV. Mary Shelley has written a beautifully evocative thriller with a great deal of philosophical discourse on the limits of man's arrogance, the creation of life, the consequences of choices made. I am very glad I finally got around to reading this. "
— Lauri, 1/31/2014" Written by a woman during a time when females were disadvantaged. Most contemporary youth would find it difficult to form a coherent sentence, let alone write an entire novel of the same calibre at the age when she wrote the book. Highly recommended. "
— Thomas, 1/31/2014" A nice quick science fiction story with gothic themes and religious undertones. The only thing I ever took issue with is that the monster has an articulate and large vocabulary, though this is explained in-book, so there's reasons for that, though I think they are flimsy. "
— Stephen, 1/31/2014" I did not enjoy this. I like the story, but it was just soo hard for me to get through. I agree with the person that said, "reading this is like trying to swim in a pool of cement." "
— Alesia, 1/30/2014" The story explains how a dead man turns into a living monster as a result of a curious scientist's experiment n how his ghostly physical appearance stop people from getting his pain....A reader is made to experience a series of emotional ups n downs in d story........a worth reading Novel.. "
— Kritika, 1/29/2014" This was an amazing read, I loved Frankenstein. The writing style was innovative, but even more so was the concept. As the subtitle describes it, this is "The Modern Prometheus." "
— Panah, 1/29/2014" Not what I thought it would be, even better. "
— Aiden, 1/28/2014" I am not a fan of classics. The language confuses me a lot. Read this for a English novel study. Didn't like Victor at all :/ so irresponsible, breaks promises, just a jerk in general. The monster was okay and a pretty great creature. The ending was really sudden, didn't expect that at all. "
— Vivian, 1/28/2014" I hv read 18% of Frankenstein Book. It is very boring :( I am not going to read the rest of the chapters. "
— Sindhu, 1/27/2014" I, in honest, was not sure what to expect when I started to read "Frankenstein" other than it was a Gothic Romance about a man who created another man- or monster. The descriptions made were very beautiful or terrifying, contrasting light and dark. I quickly grew to love the characters and feel empathy for the horrible acts and tragedies... "
— AnnMarie, 1/27/2014" There are really two versions of Frankenstein: the Hollywood versions and the original novel. Hollywood puts significant attention into the monsters the creation the novel on the other hand deals with the creation very perfunctorily. Much more psychological than I expected. Frankenstein the man has as many (if not more) "issues" as Frankenstein the monster. People today (and I suspect even when the novel was written) would be less likely to judge the monster based on his appearance. "
— David, 1/27/2014" I really enjoyed Frankenstein. The ending disappointed me a bit after being so emotionally attached to the characters in the novel but I recommend this book to anyone because it is really interesting and a classic that must be read by everyone in my opinion. "
— Eden, 1/26/2014" It makes me depressed to think a 17 year old girl wrote this, and still outclasses about half of all the fiction writers out there in the world today in a few pages. "
— Kuro, 1/26/2014" I LOVE the story of Frankenstein but I just don't like how Mary Shelly wrote it. I think there should have been more explanation on more importantant things insted of just the main characters feelings every other paragraph. Reading back through this review it probably will not make sense to most people. I just think there should be more action insted of explaining how your heart skipped a bunch of beats when you saw a "monster" and a giant castle. I would rather have a good in-depth explanation of their surroundings and what they see. "
— Delaney, 1/26/2014" The fact this was written by a woman when women didn't write this kind of literature makes it pretty amazing. "
— Charlotte, 1/26/2014" Frankenstein is an extremely well-known and surreal story about a scientist named Victor Frankenstein who creates a living creature out of body parts taken from dead people and pieces of animals. The creature becomes intelligent and articulate through observing a human family and how they act. He tries to be friendly to the humans he meets, but the humans all attack the creature out of fear, making the creature attack the humans out of revenge. The monster attacks and kills all of his creator, Victor Frankenstein's loved ones. I'm not really into science fiction books, but I decided to try this because of how famous the book is,and the movies made from it. There was a good deal of mystery in the story, such as trying to search for who killed Victor Frankenstein's loved ones, which made the story interesting. "
— Ian, 1/23/2014" A classic masterpiece. Extremely well written with some depth full themes. I cannot believe Mary Shelley was so young when she wrote it. I really enjoyed this book. "
— Clairemaurer7, 1/20/2014" This was a very interesting book to read and one that I would definitely recommend to everyone. It's a book that everyone needs to read because it's a classic and one of the best written horror stories. The thing that's so creepy about this book is that it has layers and unless you read it carefully and really understand what's being described, you don't quite grasp the scary aspect to it but once you do it's quite haunting. This book was a tragedy and one that made me ache for the characters: I ached for the innocent victims of the creature, for Victor Frankenstein whose life was ultimately ruined by his creation, and the creature itself for being lonely and rejected by his own creator. I did not particularly like Victor. I thought he was very selfish and foolish for creating the monster, rejecting it, not telling anyone about it, and refusing the acknowledge the monster's feelings and trying to make things right. I was almost on the creature's side the whole time because I wanted him to be accepted and happy instead of being brutally rejected everywhere he turned. Overall, it was a very well written story that still haunts me when I think of the dark, tragic story. Also, one more thing: the creator's name is Frankenstein, not the monster's. It doesn't have a name, like an abandoned baby which in a way it is. "
— Celeste, 1/20/2014" I read this book for class, but I am not griping about that. I found this book to be amazing. I had a love-hate relationship with it at times, but overall, it was great. Occasionally Shelley can be very verbose, and this actually may be due to the editing of Percy Shelley, but nonetheless the book will give you much to think about, and it will give you much to enjoy. When we studied the book in more detail, that is when I really fell in love with it. You cannot go wrong reading it, and those who didn't like it most likely didn't understand what Shelley was trying to say. Look it up and you shall understand. "
— Trey, 1/20/2014" This novel was a big surprise for me. As Frankenstein was so widely shown in films, and it was among the "horror symbols" I didn't expect much. But the deep psychological and sociological features of the characters, the alegory of the french revolution, and the way in wich we can think of the creature as a symbol of many things, for instance ourselves and our need to be accepted by others, among other aspects of this piece, made me change my mind. I feel as the creature sometimes, created and left alone in a world that rejects me because I don't look as they expect me to do so. "
— Costanza, 1/19/2014" Great food for thought. Is someone born evil? Or does some one become evil? Is society the creator of evil? How far is it too far to go with science? "
— Geraldine, 1/19/2014" One of my favorites. Truly brilliant and thought provoking. Really love it. "
— Elena, 1/18/2014" Mary Shelley is very good at making the main character's emotional anguish tangible to the reader. You will feel acutely Victor's distress and psychological torment throughout the novel. This is a haunting and dark novel. "
— Amal, 1/18/2014" I love to read Frankenstein, but I love to teach Frankenstein more. It opens up so many ethical questions for discussion, and the kids really do enjoy reading it. "
— Meghan, 1/18/2014" You don't really know the story of Frankenstein until you've read the book. One of the earliest science fiction novels as well as a homage to the gothic with overtures towards the romantic, Frankenstein transcends its time to issue a warning over the years about the effects of science without morals. "
— Rose, 1/18/2014" It makes me depressed to think a 17 year old girl wrote this, and still outclasses about half of all the fiction writers out there in the world today in a few pages. "
— Kuro, 1/18/2014" Just okay but it's so cool that this is the first sci-fi novel. "
— Vanny, 1/17/2014" Mind twisting in that it is not nearly the ghost story you would expect. Shows you the other side of the story. "
— Christine, 1/17/2014" I had started this book several times over the years... I don't recall ever finishing it. I was adding it to my classroom library; and as a rule, I always read the book first. I cannot believe I never finished this book before. The writing is exquisite and the story is beautiful. The relationship between Frankenstein and his creation - the commonalities are revealed slowly and disturbingly. "
— JoEllen, 1/16/2014" Loved to get the real story not the myth created by cartoons and bad movies! "
— Elsabe, 1/16/2014" Surprised in a good way. Looking back at my ratings for books on this website, I read a lot of books twice. Again, I read this book more than once. "
— Teghab, 1/16/2014" This classic boo was a god read but it was not my favorite. It was a challenging read. One that someone would like if they really loved to read, sadly reading is not my true passion. This was still a great book. "
— Eric, 1/15/2014" One of my fav books "
— Salvina, 1/15/2014" Deliciously rich in prose, depth and imagery. Profound. "
— Celio, 1/14/2014" Perhaps the greatest piece of gothic literature, not only in its literary style and its ability to stand alongside time, but also in its premise--one that cannot be completely ruled out as false. "
— Jason, 1/14/2014" Gothic classic. Not your typical horror story. "
— Carmen, 1/13/2014" Had to read this book for a collage class dedicated to Frankenstein, and I must say I enjoyed the book and the class as well...! "
— Dhari, 1/13/2014" I read this at the same time as Dracula and I liked this one better "
— Andrew, 1/11/2014" I love Frankenstien movies but the book is great. "
— William, 1/11/2014" One of my favorite classics!! "
— Lisa, 1/10/2014" Ok. First off all, I'm so happy that a woman in the 19'th century wrote an amazing horror story. Second of all, I though that Frankenstein was very, very well-written. Mary Shelley created beautiful imagery and just used the words so poetically. I would have given the book five stars if it hadn't been so much about monsters, but that's just me. Oh yeah. And, Frankenstein has so many words that you might not understand, by the end of the book, you have a more extensive vocab than when you started! "
— Ryan, 1/10/2014" So before its time. The best anti-civ narrative since GILGAMESH! "
— Eireann, 1/10/2014" Morality acquired without the divine cultivation. "
— Hugh, 1/10/2014" Thirty years since my first reading of this literary gem, and it is still my go to book when contemporary "horrors" like Columbine, Virginia Tech and the recent tragic event in Connecticut become the news de jour. The question of nature vs nurture is just as relevant then as it is now. "
— Ann, 1/9/2014" Didn't finish it... I found it hard to make it through the middle of the book. There wasn't all that much action which made it hard to stay engaged and it was progressing very slowly. I would give it a 1.5. "
— Ricki, 1/9/2014" A gothic novel full of feeling and tragedy. A tale of pain and revenge. "
— Anthea, 1/9/2014" It was good but wish the beginning had a little faster tempo like the end of the book. "
— Julie, 1/8/2014" This book was not terrible by any means. My problem was I went into this book with the expectation of it being like the movie with Boris Karloff. I didn't hate this story, but it really couldn't capture my interest since I was waiting for the story to become like the movie. "
— Ryan, 1/7/2014" This was an amazing read, I loved Frankenstein. The writing style was innovative, but even more so was the concept. As the subtitle describes it, this is "The Modern Prometheus." "
— Panah, 1/7/2014" The story itself is really interesting; however, the first person narration is extremely self-centered... Most of the time I felt like I want to get out of Frankenstein's head. "
— Amy, 1/7/2014" Buena historia. Me gusta mucho. "
— lianny, 1/7/2014" Well, i only new 'frankenstein' from 'popular culture' (e.g. representations on TV). Mary Shelley's book is at points boring, at points 'old', but it certainly is worth reading, if only for the way the relationship between creation and creator is described. "
— Ioana, 1/3/2014" Not what I expected. Interesting classic. Glad I read so I know the real Frankenstein story. Tragic--just like the author's life. "
— Amber, 12/30/2013" Mary Shelley's portrayal of Victor Frankenstein's dangerous and reaching desire to blur the line between man and God's power to create life is simply fascinating. Victor succeeds in his blasphemous endeavors only to lay forth a path of misery and destruction in his every step. The monster though is the true star of this novel. He experiences the ultimate highs and deepest depths of what it feels to be human. Forced to exist on the edges of humanity, the monster follows his fated path the only way he knows how and with one single resolute purpose...with the destruction of his creator, Victor Frankenstein. "
— T., 12/28/2013" This is a powerful journey of the Gothic mind. The imagery is especially powerful as a consideration of the movement towards finding the sublime in the world itself upon disenfranchisement with held beliefs. "
— Edward, 12/27/2013" Buena historia. Me gusta mucho. "
— lianny, 12/27/2013" This was boring and anti climatic. "
— Lauren, 12/26/2013" The monster's threats on the mountain top took the book from a 0 Star to a 5. I've carried so many debates and discussions with family and friends on how this book elevated just let alone from the monster's growth and development. "
— Jeremiah, 12/25/2013" I unfortunately read this AFTER seeing the iconic film with Boris Karloff. Read this before seeing any film or production---it is a terrific book! "
— Edwin, 12/25/2013" I assigned this book to my senior English class so I thought that I'd better read it again. I'm so glad for the assignment and the reread. It's full of great questions and so pertinent in today's push of scientific limits/boundaries. "
— Cherrie, 12/24/2013" This book is a new favorite of mine. It took a long time and quite a lot of effort to read, but though the end was sad, it satisfied me, which is rare for me to find in a book. I did not feel very attached to Frankenstein's (the scientist, not the monster) family, but I cared very much for Frankenstein and the monster alike. Excellent read, but I wouldn't recommend it to an impatient reader. "
— Allie, 12/23/2013" This was an OK book...Victory annoyed me :( "
— Jose, 12/22/2013" FANTASTIC story of love and abandonment. It was well worth the read:) "
— Maddy, 12/22/2013" At one point this was four tales embedded within each other. I think that was a bit excessive. As a rule, I am not overly fond of classics due to the tiresome language. Altogether, I suppose it was worth the read, but I am not rushing to buy it or read it again. "
— Tabitha, 12/21/2013" Much better than I anticipated it to be. Great to read a classic and properly understand the story. All movies that I've seen are completely different to the actual story. "
— Kirstie, 12/18/2013" Good story, wish to re-read as I feel I would appreciate it more as an adult. "
— Kyle, 12/18/2013" The were many parts I really disliked about this book. There were a couple parts I did like though. The first half was good, but when the monster tells his story to Doctor Frankenstein, everything went downhill. The monsters story was WAY TOO LONG. After that meeting, most of the rest of the book is mere rambling of depressing thoughts with some overly descriptive parts of traveling thrown in. Plus, Mary Shelley turned a genius of a man into a clueless one with absolutely no common sense. I'm being generous to the first half of the book by giving it a two star rating. "
— Mollie, 12/17/2013" It was good but if you don't like classics I don't recommend this book to you "
— Kxk6419, 12/13/2013" I was really looking forward to reading this book for my literature class. however, I was extremely dissapointed with the story and I found the book actually quite irritating at times. "
— Maike, 12/13/2013" One of the most significant works in the canon of English literature. Period. "
— Lucian, 12/13/2013" I really liked the language of this book, and I found the story of the monster very intriguing and fascinating. I liked this book a lot more than I thought I would when I was assigned it in class. "
— Andie, 12/11/2013" I'm only giving it 3 stars because I liked the ending. But all in all, it was really dry. "
— Raeanna, 12/10/2013" I surprisingly liked this book. I thought i was going to hate it, but the story was actually very good; sad but good. "
— Megan, 12/10/2013" I love Frankenstien movies but the book is great. "
— William, 12/9/2013" Yet another selection from my 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die (Edited by Peter Boxall) list. Aren't you pleased mother? "
— David, 12/9/2013" I read this book in grade 12, just for the sake of reading it. I went back and decided to re-read this book - glad I did, because now I appreciate it in its entirety. I LOVED IT! "
— Ravneet, 12/9/2013" I really enjoyed Frankenstein. The ending disappointed me a bit after being so emotionally attached to the characters in the novel but I recommend this book to anyone because it is really interesting and a classic that must be read by everyone in my opinion. "
— Eden, 12/7/2013" Utterly unlike the monster movies. For one thing, the monster is more well-read and better-spoken than you are. Unless you're Stephen Colbert. "
— Margaret, 12/6/2013" Reading and re-reading for my English lit as level. I've enjoyed reading it ... I think. "
— Alice, 12/6/2013" I really think the concept of this book is wonderful, but the execution of her ideas is just plain awful. A seriously near-terrible book. My margins are filled with non-stop exasperated comments. If you want to read something old and gothic and amazing, seriously, Bram Stoker's Dracula is the one. "
— Eric, 12/5/2013" A classic, it's scary in the simplest of ways. "
— Priscilla, 12/5/2013" I loved this book and it is nothing like the films that have been made allegedly based on it. I felt sorry for the "creature" but also very sad for Frankenstein. For such a short book there is so much in it and really well written. "
— Carol, 12/3/2013" I had great sympathy for the monster. It was his poor treatment by humans that turned him into the destructive creature he became. How sad it was to see this. He had my sympathy. Beware bullies! "
— Jhariton, 12/2/2013" One of my favorite classics!! "
— Lisa, 11/30/2013" Utterly miserable, but quite compelling! "
— Amy, 11/28/2013" Not one of my favorite books I've ever read in school that's for sure, and quite possibly the worst ending I've ever read. BUT the story was sort of interesting... "
— Corynn, 11/26/2013" it was amazing and sure the old english takes a while to get used to but other than that it's an amazing book with a Gothic and gory theme. it will capture you and not make you stop reading until you learn Victor's story and the Creature's story as well. "
— Lissette, 11/26/2013" Very different than what I was expecting. It's a very tragic story and actually gives Frankenstein's monster a personality that makes you feel sorry for him. Definitely not a book that I would recommend just reading for fun though. "
— Tiffany, 11/25/2013" A gothic novel full of feeling and tragedy. A tale of pain and revenge. "
— Anthea, 11/22/2013" I read this because I was curious as to what it was all about. Frankenstien seems to have taken on a life of it's own (no pun intended) in movies. I thought this would be a scary book but it wasn't. I think it is a metafore in that if you create a monster, you need to deal with it. "
— Shari, 11/20/2013" I finally got around to reading this classic. It wasn't what I expected. I really liked it though. "
— Janae, 11/19/2013" I assigned this book to my senior English class so I thought that I'd better read it again. I'm so glad for the assignment and the reread. It's full of great questions and so pertinent in today's push of scientific limits/boundaries. "
— Cherrie, 11/19/2013" Wow! Mary Shelley wrote this when she was only 19 years old! The themes however are far too advanced and much more philosophical for me to discuss intelligently! "
— Missy, 11/19/2013" This book was a torture for me. I mean adults might like it but as a highschooler, NOOOO!! I mean it's not just me a lot of my friends thought that it was a horrible book. Though you can't blame us. We're 21st century teens. 19th century is a bit old and boring for us. "
— Aleyna, 11/18/2013" I think it's my all time favorite book. "
— Lura, 11/18/2013" Didn't finish it... I found it hard to make it through the middle of the book. There wasn't all that much action which made it hard to stay engaged and it was progressing very slowly. I would give it a 1.5. "
— Ricki, 11/14/2013" An amazing classic that I had the luck to read as a young boy that made me realise women could also be talented writers. "
— Shadhah, 11/14/2013" That book had a lot of big words in it, and probably every sentence said the same thing. So one whole page took up 1 sentence. Victor is the most weirdest character ever! But at some parts it was interesting. "
— Brandon, 11/11/2013" Takes a little while to get used to the 'old' way of speaking but is an excellent read. "
— A.J., 11/10/2013" The story itself is good with good meaning behind it. The over use of some words made the book really hard for me to get through. It took me longer to read this than most books. "
— Blackcatmoon66, 11/9/2013" didnt think i would like this so was pleasantly surprised how much i liked it "
— Renee, 11/8/2013" Written by a woman during a time when females were disadvantaged. Most contemporary youth would find it difficult to form a coherent sentence, let alone write an entire novel of the same calibre at the age when she wrote the book. Highly recommended. "
— Thomas, 11/8/2013" So super duper great, I absolutely adored every character. I was absolutely and entirely engaged by every word written by tMary Shelley, and I particularly joined the elevated language. "
— Taylor, 11/5/2013" Not bad for a first effort, great language even if the basic science is a bit off, and I'm not referring to the creature "
— Paul, 11/2/2013" Had to read for English class. It was pretty good in the middle, but the beginning and end weren't so great! "
— Chloe, 11/2/2013" It had a lot of potential. I loved the changes in narrative perspective. But the writing was so unengaging and somewhat objective, like viewing the action through a distant, cloudy window. The action was too slow. "
— Ilona, 10/31/2013" It wasn't the monster's fault! "
— Cecilia, 10/29/2013" A classic and one of my favourite books of all time. "
— Victoria, 10/27/2013" One of my favorites on the required reading list. "
— Chrissie, 10/26/2013" I know this book is a classic, but it took everything I had to get through it. It was very slow to take off, and was very steady throughout the whole book, I never felt like I was on the edge of my seat. ever. "
— Reagan, 10/26/2013" Dr. Frankenstein cannot be trusted. I found very little about this story to be believable - especially the part where the monster has the capability of eloquent speech. No way, not buying it! "
— Tasha, 10/24/2013" I suspect that if I bothered to read Twilight, it would strike me a lot like Frankenstein, which I now consider to be gothic Twilight. It's not bad, but lots of emo-y simps. "
— Matt, 10/13/2013" I could relate to a lot of things in this books, mainly loneliness. "
— Isabel, 10/9/2013" Interesting from a historical point of view, but quite a slow read. "
— Alicia, 10/6/2013" I loved this book and it is nothing like the films that have been made allegedly based on it. I felt sorry for the "creature" but also very sad for Frankenstein. For such a short book there is so much in it and really well written. "
— Carol, 10/3/2013" You can, if you try, really get into this book. It has a much deeper meaning than it seems. "
— Lacey, 9/28/2013" I have to be honest--I know it was good for me to read this book, but I can't say I enjoyed it. Feel free to judge me now. "
— Laurel, 9/28/2013" A beautiful depiction of the Swiss landscape with a truly Gothic plot. A fantastic story, and rightly considered a classic. "
— James, 9/15/2013" One of my favorites. Digs deep. "
— Sam, 9/11/2013" Very moving. It's a book about the human condition in it's rawest form. "

— Priscilla, 9/1/2013" Relentless hyperbole. But I liked it. "
— Gael, 8/30/2013" This novel deserves much praise for being one of the first SF novels, and the monster is a fine character. It's also one of the few lengthy pieces of Romantic literature still easily readable. I didn't remember Victor Frankenstein being such a whiner, however. "
— Richard, 8/29/2013" The monster's threats on the mountain top took the book from a 0 Star to a 5. I've carried so many debates and discussions with family and friends on how this book elevated just let alone from the monster's growth and development. "
— Jeremiah, 8/21/2013" Deliciously rich in prose, depth and imagery. Profound. "
— Celio, 8/15/2013" A fantastic book written by a very young woman at the time. "

— Janae, 8/11/2013" A beautiful depiction of the Swiss landscape with a truly Gothic plot. A fantastic story, and rightly considered a classic. "
— James, 8/5/2013" So different than the movies although very tragic and sad "
— Ileana, 8/1/2013" How do you even review Frankenstein, though? Especially from the perspective of a genre reader, it's like an English speaker trying to review the Roman alphabet. "
— Milo, 7/30/2013" Honestly, one of the only books I've read that I truly despise. Yuck. "
— Rachel, 7/23/2013" The book can drag at some points but I found it to be overall really enjoyable, and couldn't put it down. "
— Sxyvaan, 7/20/2013" Knowing more about the story without ever reading the book, I was so pleasantly surprised at how brilliant this book is... True horror leaves much to thought and imagination! "

— Samara, 5/28/2013" Easy, beautiful read, but the plot was odd (even for me) and there were unignorable plot holes strewn throughout. I enjoyed reading it nonetheless! "
— Tatum, 5/26/2013" I sort of read this one. Not really. But sort of. "
— Alyssa, 5/24/2013" Had to read for English class. It was pretty good in the middle, but the beginning and end weren't so great! "

— Dhari, 5/4/2013" This was an amazing read, I loved Frankenstein. The writing style was innovative, but even more so was the concept. As the subtitle describes it, this is "The Modern Prometheus." "
— Panah, 4/27/2013" Good book. I actually learned a lot from Frankenstein. People who despise this book clearly just don't get it. It's not just a book about a monster...he resembles many things. Look for the symbolism. "

— Crymzen, 4/11/2013" Well, I'm glad to have finally read this classic (in the non "Step-Up Readers" edition). I can't say that the story really grabbed me, but I can see why the story has endured. now I just need to find the Cliff Notes for it. "
— Kate, 4/9/2013" The main character is slightly annoying and it was all way too dramatic to me, but that's ok because it only matters what YOU think about it. "
— Sloan, 4/4/2013" Very nice, liked the questions, liked the exploration of man and monster, and very much liked that Frankenstein is the name of the scientist not his creation "
— Carolyn, 4/2/2013" I sort of read this one. Not really. But sort of. "
— Alyssa, 3/22/2013" A quick reading, but an essential one. In case you have seen the movie Frankenstein (1931), you must read this book anyway, 'cause it's a totally different (and better) story. It's a must read in every sense of the term. "
— Arthur, 3/7/2013" A quick reading, but an essential one. In case you have seen the movie Frankenstein (1931), you must read this book anyway, 'cause it's a totally different (and better) story. It's a must read in every sense of the term. "

— Kim, 10/2/2012" Yes it was good, but I wasn't prepared for how dense it was! Took me 2 weeks to read and yeah I still have questions about it. It was a library book so I didn't have time to read all the extras. I'm glad I finally read it, it was beautifully written! "

— Barnaby, 9/4/2012" I enjoyed Frankenstein. It's not an easy read but it's engrossing in an Ancient Mariner type of way. You have to read on to hear his tale whether you want to or not. I'd like to read this again sometime in the near future. "
— Anthony, 8/27/2012" More human than human. Yes. "

— David, 6/26/2012" Much better than the movies. "
— Iniara, 6/17/2012" Written with just as much melodrama as you'll see in every film adaptation, Shelly's novel is nonetheless still quite powerful. — Diana, 12/12/2011" Victor Frankenstein is such a dick. I don't understand why anyone in the book is even vaguely nice to him. It is sort of enjoyable if you enjoy stupid men getting all emo and it is incredibly well written, even more so when you realise Mary Shelly was 19 when she wrote it. "
— Pippa, 12/5/2011" Loved to get the real story not the myth created by cartoons and bad movies! "

— Ravneet, 9/4/2011" Very interesting... wasn't sure I was going to like it at first, but the story and the characters definitely grew on me. By the end of it, I was sitting on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to befall Victor next... great plot twists and certainly a spooky read. "

— Jenna, 8/3/2011" I did not expect to like this book at all, but it was beautifully written and though sad, was very good. "
— Felicia, 7/31/2011" One of my favorites on the required reading list. "
— Chrissie, 7/30/2011" A classic that needs to be read ! "
— Dan, 7/25/2011" Read this for an online course. I couldn't get into it (too much overwrought emotion all the time). "
— Greg, 7/24/2011" be it monster or human, shelley beautifuly conveyed the message that all are passionate in terms of love and affections "
— Rey, 7/22/2011" One of the best books i have ever read. When i was in high school we had to do an ethics vs science paper on this book. So it really made us look at creation in a totally different light. "
— Felicia, 7/20/2011" Tried to love it as much as Dracula, but the story got a little wayward in parts. "
— Long, 7/14/2011" written for teens , like teens think, stupid "
— John, 7/11/2011" Written with just as much melodrama as you'll see in every film adaptation, Shelly's novel is nonetheless still quite powerful. Frankenstein still allows parallels to be drawn with our times despite being originally published nearly 200 years ago. For all its symbolism it remains a very human story. "
— Matthew, 7/10/2011" It was a good book. It had weird stuff. It was kind of scary. "
— Ella, 7/10/2011" Honestly, one of the only books I've read that I truly despise. Yuck. "
— Rachel, 7/8/2011" More human than human. Yes. "
— John, 7/5/2011" A good read. Enjoyed it . "
— Gopala, 7/4/2011" Thought provoking and in some instances I could feel the loneliness of the horrific creature Frankenstein had created. If you love mystery and hair-raising experiences on dark alleys this might just be up your alley "
— Lala, 7/2/2011" I never was able to get into this one. Maybe all of the many versions of this story & character since the original has spoiled it for me. "
— Katie, 6/17/2011" When I first read this, I was a freshman in high school and had no desire to read this novel, but I am very glad I did. It is a wonderful novel that invites the reader to look at oneself and the choices that we take in our own lives that can come with undesirable cost. "

— Alexander, 5/23/2011" It was kind of a hard book to read (for me). Some parts were really slow and hard to understand. But it is really a classic that everyone should read. It shows the harshness and brutality of humans towards "different" things. "

— Morgan, 5/19/2011" I read this book on a train bound for Scotland in 1995. It has a compelling moral: we create monsters by the way we treat or mistreat people. "

Read this as it is an important story in modern literature but also notice the nonsensical unfolding account of that creature. "
