"This book wasn't what I expected, it was better. I expected a blood-bullets-booze-&-broads Matt Scudder novel. Instead I got a Matt Scudder novel with the cerebral, urban sophisticate quality of a Bernie Rhodenbarr novel (by the same author). I liked this Matt Scudder better!"
— Roland (4 out of 5 stars)
“Block has graced mystery fans with another wonderfully textured Scudder novel.”
— Booklist" Despite the Cather and Wallace Stevens references, and the sly nod to a Keller story, this may be the first time I came away from a Scudder novel feeling a little underwhelmed. "
— Kit, 1/14/2014" 3.5 stars. This was a book that involved three murder mysteries, which they referred to as the "hat-trick". I guessed the "whodunit" around the main murder plot before it was revealed, but that didn't take any enjoyment out of reading it. "
— Glenn, 12/26/2013" Not one of his better ones. Probably the least Scudder-like of the series. "

— Ann, 12/10/2013" I rated all of the Matthew Scudder series by Lawrence Block 4 stars but I could have easily said 5. They are all great mysteries and I have loved reading them in order and one right after the other. I really recommend them. "

— David, 4/20/2013" Very Good; Continuing character: Matt Scudder; PI Scudder uncovers three murderers, including one who foretold his crimes by letters to the newspaper. "
