Publisher Description

Elantris was the capital of Arelon: gigantic, beautiful, literally radiant, filled with benevolent beings who used their powerful magical abilities for the benefit of all. Yet each of these demigods was once an ordinary person until touched by the mysterious transforming power of the Shaod. Ten years ago, without warning, the magic failed. Elantrians became wizened, leper-like, powerless creatures, and Elantris itself dark, filthy, and crumbling.

Arelon’s new capital, Kae, crouches in the shadow of Elantris. Princess Sarene of Teod arrives for a marriage of state with Crown Prince Raoden, hoping—based on their correspondence—to also find love. She finds instead that Raoden has died and she is considered his widow. Both Teod and Arelon are under threat as the last remaining holdouts against the imperial ambitions of the ruthless religious fanatics of Fjordell. So Sarene decides to use her new status to counter the machinations of Hrathen, a Fjordell high priest who has come to Kae to convert Arelon and claim it for his emperor and his god.

But neither Sarene nor Hrathen suspect the truth about Prince Raoden. Stricken by the same curse that ruined Elantris, Raoden was secretly exiled by his father to the dark city. His struggle to help the wretches trapped there begins a series of events that will bring hope to Arelon, and perhaps reveal the secret of Elantris itself.

A rare epic fantasy that doesn’t recycle the classics and that is a complete and satisfying story in one volume, Elantris is fleet and fun, full of surprises and characters to care about.

"REally loved this! I'm a huge Sanderson fan! You could tell however that this was his first book, as the characters aren't quite as developed as they are in his later books, but the cebtral premise of the story was fascinating, and hos two main characterss at least were well rounded. My only complaint - and it is a little one - is that not all the losses ends were nicely tied up. I'm not sure if this is because he planned a sequel, or if it was just the inexperience of e new writer? Would LOVE there to be a sequel, Brandon Sanderson ROCKS!!!!"

" Audio book narration very poor. Sentences spoken differently, words completely mispronounced and even some complete mistakes such as saying the exact opposite. Novel itself is good. Not mistborn or starlight good but entertaining enough. "

" Very enjoyable. Loved the parts involving Raoden and Elantris. Sarene was annoying at times but interesting too. Hrathen's character was very well developed. The political and religious machinations got somewhat tedious at times but they helped to create a realistic atmosphere. The idea of the Shaod and AonDor was very original and compelling. "

" Brandon Sanderson's debut novel and a stunning one at that. His world is creatively built and incredibly solid as well as totally immersive. His charcters have depth and are endearing. Sanderson speciallizes in the social aspects of his character and is able to make his relationships profound and real. You'll learn to love the characters and find yourself intrigued with the characters as they unlock the mysteries and face the challenges of their world. This is a novel you don't want to miss! "

" Fantasy. The religious aspects are insulting to anyone of faith. But that should be expected from a mind clearly not Christian. The story was fine, the action prosaic. Not the finest book I've ever read, by a long shot, but it got me through my cold. "

" Sanderson's debut novel was nearly as good as the Mistborn trilogy, but not quite. The magical world he created was fantastic. My main problem with this book was that all the names/religions/places were confusing. And I didn't really bother to remember some of the minor characters. "
