Clouds are brewing over Cadogan House, and recently turned vampire Merit can't tell if this is the darkness before the dawn or the calm before the storm. With the city itself in turmoil over paranormals and the state threatening to pass a paranormal registration act, times haven't been this precarious for vampires since they came out of the closet. If only they could lay for a bit, and let the mortals calm down.
That's when the waters of Lake Michigan suddenly turn pitch black—and things really start getting ugly.
Chicago's mayor insists it's nothing to worry about, but Merit knows only the darkest magic could have woven a spell powerful enough to change the very fabric of nature. She'll have to turn to friends old and new to find out who's behind this, and stop them before it's too late for vampires and humans alike.

"I would have liked to have given this book 5 stars. It's a good series with modern day characters. But this book had a none too surprising if not predicable twist that I kept telling myself couldn't happen. Without saying more and ruining the books ending, I can help but find myself wishing for happy endings in the next installment."

“A wonderfully compelling vampire heroine.”
— Julie Kenner, USA Today bestselling authorA wonderfully compelling vampire heroine.
— Julie Kenner“Three cheers for the Chicagoland Vampire series and Neill’s latest addition! The story picks up where Hard Bitten left off: Merit is mourning the loss of Ethan. It’s a loss that permeates her spirit and sets the tone for the book. Yet Neill manages to keep the action going and the tension tight as Merit struggles to fulfill her obligations and make sense of the ever-changing world around her.”
— RT Book Reviews (4 stars)“Chloe Neill keeps readers right on the precipice of anticipation.”
— Fresh Fiction, praise for the author" I'm not really sure how I feel about this book. Chloe Neill has returned Ethan to Chicago but many questions remain and I'm unsure if I can trust her ... The book ends with a nice storyline setup for the next one and I suppose I'm intrigued enough to read it when it comes out in August. "
— NiteReader, 2/10/2014" Well played, Ms. Neill. Well played. "
— Ronni, 1/27/2014" What!?! This book was definitely my least favorite of this series so far. I had a feeling that the author was going to jump the shark, and she did. The plot was weak and the story line has definitely taken a turn for the completely unbelievable (even for a vampire book)! "
— Amanda, 1/15/2014" Just when I think things can't get any more confuzzled - they do. I love this series! Always on the edge of my seat, never know what's going to happen. I love it! "
— Kirsten, 8/26/2013" Interesting how she fixed the problem from the last book. Next, please. "
— Becky, 6/9/2013" Alright, so my only problem is Ethan, hes either dead or hes not. I'm gonna be really unhappy if Mallory or Tate has control over him. "
— Lburt, 2/20/2013" 3 stars ... even though nothing really happened in this book. And I am not sure about the conclusion/ending... "
— Anna, 12/17/2012" I love this series SO much! "
— Ashley, 9/29/2012" I love this series it's my new vampire addiction.Wow the ending was unexpected. "
— Jewel, 4/1/2012" This book was awesome! It had me in tears at the end. What a great series to read!! "
— TJ, 3/26/2012" Great series to read. May be aimed at young adults, but I have found the whole series very enjoyable and I am in my 40's. I absolutely ADORE Ethan! I want one... "
— AsilVee, 3/6/2012Chloe Neill was born and raised in the South, but she now makes her home in the Midwest—just close enough to Cadogan House and St. Sophia’s to keep an eye on things. When not transcribing Merit and Lily’s adventures, she bakes, works, and scours the Internet for good recipes and great graphic design. Chloe also maintains her sanity by spending time with her boys—her favorite landscape photographer/husband and their dogs, Baxter and Scout.
