When you don’t talk, there’s a lot of stuff that ends up not getting said. Harsh words indeed, from Brian Nelson of all people. But, D.J. can’t help admitting, maybe he’s right. When you don’t talk, there’s a lot of stuff that ends up not getting said. Stuff like why her best friend, Amber, isn’t so friendly anymore. Or why her little brother, Curtis, never opens his mouth. Why her mom has two jobs and a big secret. Why her college-football-star brothers won’t even call home. Why her dad would go ballistic if she tried out for the high school football team herself. And why Brian is so, so out of her league. When you don’t talk, there’s a lot of stuff that ends up not getting said. Welcome to the summer that fifteen-year-old D.J. Schwenk of Red Bend, Wisconsin, learns to talk, and ends up having an awful lot of stuff to say.

"Loved it! The best audiobook I've listened to in ages-- maybe in the top 3 or 5 I've ever listened to. The narrator has the perfect Wisconsin accent, and the perfect inflection. The characters are really rich, as is the setting, and the writing seems spontaneous. D.J.'s voice creates a real person-- I felt like I knew her. The dislike-turned-romance between her and Brian is infectious and you're cheering them on the whole way. Not to mention a lot of valuable life lessons mixed in as effortlessly as breathing."

" I don't love sports books, but Dairy Queen kept me reading. Totally enjoyable with interesting characters and a unique voice. I'm reading the sequel. "
— Kaiya, 1/31/2014" I love a good coming of age book and this fit the bill perfectly. The author speaks with a true teenagers voice (lots of run-on sentences and sarcasm) which took several pages to get used to, but I found it quite amusing once I got into the book. "
— Sue, 1/16/2014" I never wanted to put this book down when I was reading it,I love this book!! "

— ♫♥✿LovLivLife, 9/23/2013" Review forthcoming at Coffee & Wizards. "
— Meghan, 9/2/2013" This was cute. Not much else to say about it but if you need some mind numbing YA romance this would do the trick. "
— Kristina, 5/24/2013" Nice story about a farm girl from a small town and how in one summer her life completely changes. Would do for teen book club. "
— Lisa, 1/31/2013" Ok, not a huge fan though. "
— Cora, 1/19/2013" This is a great book for the voice of the narrator alone. The story is engaging and entertaining, and I recommend this one with my highest rating. "
— Eric, 11/26/2012" DJ lives/works on a dairy farm, loves football, is super sporty, and doesn't talk much. So basically, we have nothing in common. But I love her so much! In spite of our differences, I literally cheered for her, out loud, at several point during the book. I'm anxious to read # 2. "
— Meredith, 10/28/2012" REALLy good as an audiobok. Midwestern accent was just right. "
— Amy, 4/15/2012" The pplot didn't really finish it's self. Besides that I loved the characters and setting. "

— Brenda, 6/16/2011" This was an average YA book. Nothing special, nothing wrong either. "
— Jenna, 6/15/2011" This is a quick read that is a light topic but has really great quotes that made me think. No this is not an ugly girl that gets voted prom queen. It is a series of three books and I haven't been able to get my hands on the last two. "
— Abrey, 6/14/2011" I loved the main character DJ and the story of her awakening awareness. DJ's voice is appealing; the book is funny and oddly believable. "
— Emily, 6/13/2011" I mean, it's basically There's a Girl in My Hammerlock but with football, Wisconsin, and a slightly older focus/audience, but it's really, really good. I don't even care about football, but I could mostly follow what they were saying about it. Very good voice for the main character. "
— Emily, 6/6/2011" Awesome. That's all I need to say and all you need to know. "
— Dee, 6/5/2011" i thought that this book was very inspiring and a fun read. "
— Marissa, 6/5/2011" Great story, especially if you like football, an unpredictable romance, and family issues. The language isn't always great, but the story is. "
