Publisher Description

It is 1938 and the final days of the British Empire. In a bungalow high up in the green hills above the plains of Ceylon, under a vast blue sky, live the Ferguson family: Bella, a precocious eight-year-old; her father Henry—owner of Pitlochry, a tea plantation—and her mother Virginia. The story centres around the Pavilion in the Clouds, set in the idyllic grounds carved out of the wilderness. But all is not as serene as it seems. Bella is suspicious of her governess Miss White’s intentions. Her suspicion sparks off her mother’s imagination and after an unfortunate series of events, a confrontation is had with Miss White and a gunshot rings off around the hills.

Years later, Bella, now living back in Scotland at university in St Andrews, is faced once again with her past. Will she at last find out what happened between her father and Miss White? And will the guilt she has lived with all these years be reconciled by a long overdue apology?

" The Pavilion in the Clouds was just okay - not terrible but not particularly good either. Though Alexander's writing is usually enjoyable to me (I do love the #1 Ladies Detective Agency series), this one seemed to lack the intricate details and captivating storylines we usually find in his books. However the reader gave a solid narration that was easy to follow so that's a plus. It's an alright listen, but nothing to write home about. "

" I've admired Alexander McCall Smith's writing in the past but sad to say, The Pavilion in the Clouds was a huge disappointment. The narration was rather good but the writing was overly simplistic and repetitive, losing my interest at multiple points. I hope his next book is better than this! "

" The Pavilion in the Clouds is an extraordinary audio and literary experience. The combination of Smith's award-winning writing and Rintoul's masterful narration create a vivid, immersive world full of fascinating characters and compelling stories. Rintoul's vocal delivery captures the nuances of the text, deftly conveying emotion and atmosphere, while Smith's thoughtful themes elicit feelings of nostalgia and introspection. A must-listen for any fan of great writing, The Pavilion in the Clouds is an audio tour de force that I absolutely loved! "

" The Pavilion in the Clouds is a pretty enjoyable audiobook. The narration is great thanks to David Rintoul's soothing voice. The writing is also pleasant and easy to follow, making this a great choice for those looking for a lighthearted read. While the story does have its flaws, overall it's an enjoyable and breezy listen that passed the time (almost 7 hours) quite nicely for me on a recent trip! "
