Within the pages of very rare books, some centuries old, lie the secrets of the paranormal. Abby Radwell’s unusual psychic talent has made her an expert in such volumes—and sometimes taken her into dangerous territory. After a deadly incident in the private library of an obsessive collector, Abby receives a blackmail threat, and rumors swirl that an old alchemical text known as The Key has reappeared on the black market. A number of ruthless people are searching for the book. Some believe that Abby can find it for them.
Abby wants no part of it. But the pressure mounts after a rare-book dealer dies mysteriously. Convinced that she needs an investigator who can also play bodyguard, Abby hires Sam Coppersmith, an expert in paranormal crystals and amber—“hot rocks.” Passion flares immediately between them, yet neither entirely trusts the other. Both are concealing secrets. Both have their own agendas.
Sam concludes that the only way to keep Abby safe is to take her to property owned by his rich and reclusive family—a compound in the small town of Copper Beach, on a private island. But small towns are no safer than large cities when it comes to dealing with a killer who has paranormal talents, and a blackmailer who will stop at nothing to obtain an ancient alchemical code.…

"Oh, this book was great! I like the particular paranormal rules she's set up, but what really cinched it was the characters. Jayne Ann Krentz writes such "real" people! I especially liked the hero's POV sections. And the dog was fantastic. I devoured this book in one sitting."
— Claire (5 out of 5 stars)
" A little too weird for my taste. I'm not into the power of crystals and have never heard of "hot books" that have to be decoded to be read. Just give me a good mystery. "
— Linda, 2/15/2014" I have not read a book by Jayne Ann Krentz that I haven't enjoyed. This one kept me reading into late at night! I just started Legacy. "
— Shirley, 2/5/2014" Typical Jayne Ann Krentz. Fun, fast read. I do wish she would stop doing the trilogies though. I'm not real big on her writing as Amanda Quick or Jayne Castle all that much. "
— Kristin, 1/17/2014" The first in a series. Crystals and rare earths and lots of woo woo. Not sure I will read the rest as they come out "
— Marilyn, 12/18/2013" I love Jayne Ann Krentz, but I just couldn't get into this one. "
— Diana, 12/15/2013" It was nice to have a paranormal romance book from Jayne Ann Krentz without the Arcane Circle. It's interesting to see some of the ideas from the Jayne Castle Harmony books starting to cross over to Earth. "
— Stasha, 11/29/2013" Quite satisfactory for passing time while driving or on the stationary bike. Nothing special. It is what it is. "
— Kapi, 11/17/2013" This book is one of the best books I've read in the crime/mystery category in a long time. It's a must read and I guarantee that you'll become attached to the characters as well as finishing it within a few hours! Enjoy! "
— Amy, 11/16/2013" I listened to the audiobook in the car on the way home from a trip. I found it a very enjoyable listen. I have read many other of her books and even though it wasn't her best it still was very good. I'm looking forward to the next book in the "Dark Legacy" series. "
— Cindy, 11/13/2013" *happy sigh* JAK delivers just as expected. (Also, no more pen name & time-entangled Arcane trilogies, yay!) "
— ms, 10/3/2013" JAK does it once again. Sucked in from word one. Such a great start to the new series. We have crystals and psychic powers, only this time these things are not the norm. One excellent and fast read. Couldn't put it down! "
— Sue, 8/23/2013" Looking forward to the next two books in the trilogy. "
— Lisa, 6/22/2013" Another GREAT read by Jayne Ann Krentz! I love the way she writes her paranormal stories! I can't wait to read the next book that comes out!! "
— Amanda, 1/25/2013" I do like her paranormal series, I can leave vampires but do like the paranormal. "
— Jeanne, 11/20/2012" This is a new series and because I like the author, I'll read it - but I won't go crazy looking for it. "
— Carrie, 8/12/2012" Entertaining. Cheesy dialogue. "
— Jodie, 6/3/2012" Another fine paranormal romance by Krentz. "
— Glenn, 5/22/2012" I haven't met a Krentz I didn't like, and this one is no different. Jayne always tells a great story with well done characters and interesting story lines. I highly recommend this book. "
— Roswita, 5/4/2012" I rated this book five stars, but I have been reading the author's paranormal series from the beginning. If you haven't the book would make no sense to you. "
— Carol, 5/1/2012" Loved it!! Can't wait for the next one to come out! "
— Katie, 3/25/2012" The book was okay wasnt to fond of it but it was a good read and i like reading her books "
