In Cat & Mouse, things get too close to home. Two killers, one operating in America-one in Europe-believe Alex Cross is the only worthy opponent in the deadly game each has planned. Villian Gary Soneji is back. He vows his last act on earth will be taking the life of Alex Cross. But first he wants to have some fun. Union Station, Washington, and Penn Station in New York are scenes of chaos as Soneji creates a train ride to hell. With time running out, Cross must predict Soneji's next move: the lives of thousands of innocent commuters hang in the balance.
Meanwhile, a second game of cat and mouse is being played. Thomas Augustine Pierce is referred to by the FBI and Interpol as "St. Augustine" for his uncanny ability to catch killers. He has been chasing his demon, Mr. Smith, since his fiancee was brutally murdered, her heart cut out. Panic spreads through Europe when Mr. Smith strikes in London...then Paris...
But when the Soneji case takes a baffling new twist, Pierce must put the Mr. Smith case on hold to assist in a special investigation. Will Cross-or Pierce-figure out in time who is the cat, and who is the mouse?

"I think this is the best Cross novel so far. Patterson makes the story complex and thrilling by changing narrators. First Alex meets up with Gary Soneji (antagonist in book 1, Along Came a Spider). I don't ant to give anything in the novel away. Kyle Craig is still adamant about needing Alexs help about the Mr smith case. The FBI thinks Mr. Smith is complex, but is he really? Or is he just as simple as your average serial killer? Thomas Pierce was finishing up his studies to be a doctor at Harvard when Mr Smith kills his lover Isabella. Mr Smith has now moved on to murdering in Europe. Alex is in love with Christine and I love their relationship. I love the language and feelings Patterson uses when Alex is talking about her. Excited to start Pop Goes the Weasel."

— San Diego Union-Tribune" The plotlines of the two villains don't overlap very well; it reads like two novellas crammed together into the same book. But all the little Alex Cross touches (and the Soneji bits) were enjoyable. "
— Lisa, 2/10/2014" this was a very a good book Alex Cross has to deal with Gary Soneji again. And a very insane killer who kills children and puts them on school grounds. He taunts Alex Cross and he finds the youngest serial killer there ever is. "
— Nancy, 2/8/2014" Alex Cross teams with an ally to chase one crook and suddenly finds himself in the midst of fighting another, unexpected foe. This is a great potboiler with short chapters and abrupt changes of narration, meaning another great Alex Cross book. "
