New York Times bestseller Karin Slaughter set some of her most loved thrillers in Grant County. In Broken, Sara Linton returns to see her family in Grant, the place where she suffered her greatest loss. Her past life as the town’s medical examiner won’t let her go, however, as she is asked to consult with a young prisoner accused of murder. The alleged crimes wrench at Sara, but the apparent police cover-up sends her to the phone, bringing in Will Trent from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. In a case that takes countless breathtaking turns, Slaughter, “at the summit of the school of writers specializing in forensic medicine and terror,” (The Times [London]) mines to the core of her characters to find a story that is startlingly sinister, and irrepressibly human.

" Back in Grant County with the ghosts she left behind, Dr. Sara Linton is dragged into an investigation of a murdered girl, When the prime suspect is found dead in his cell, Will Trent is called in from GBI and together they have to unwind the deep, dark secrets of the police force there, which has festered following the death of Sara's husband, Chief Jeff Tolliver. "

" A real page-turner indeed, the book should have a warning: "only for healthy persons, who can do without food and sleep for the time this book needs to be read". But the end is slightly dissappointing though.... it reads as if it was abruptly added only because it's common sense that books need an ending. "

" Pretty good, but kind of lame. It was like who's the killer, who's the killer, build up. build up, and surprise! The killer's someone we barely met for 10 seconds. Um, let down. "

" I'd never read anything by Karen Slaughter before so didn't know what to expect. It was easy to read and whilst it did get a bit slow 1/4 the way through it really took off again 1/2 way as more twists were added. The ending was so gripping it was hard to read slow enough to take everything in as I was so excited to find out who did it. The reason I have not given it 5 stars is because the ending was a bit out of the blue and which we didn't know much about; it seemed disjointed. I would definitely recommend this book and will be lending it to friends and family. I hope to read more Karen Slaughter in the future :) "

" When fandom collide ... I love when this happens, and bringing Georgia to Grant County was a wise move plotwise. I enjoyed reading this book very much. Will Trent became one of my favorite male book character and I hope we will see more of him in the future in Sara's future "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Rosemary | 1/14/2014

" Even though she is a popular murder mystery writer, this is much too padded out with emotional descriptions of the protagonists and not getting on with the action! I listened to it in the car on a long drive or I would never have finished it! "

" I didn't care for it, but to be fair, I had just finished two outstanding books. By comparison, this one was weak, sophomoric. The characters were so-so, story was nothing really special. It's the curse of Dennis Lehane, everything I read for the next little while will pale by comparison. "
