"I picked this book up by accident (I thought it was a James Lee Burke novel). By the time I realized my mistake, I was already sold on it. This is the first (but certainly not the last) book that I read in the Irene Kelly series, but it covers a number of time periods and characters before it even introduces Kelly. I thought that Burke did a great job of keeping the book supenseful and threw in q few plot twists to leave the reader guessing. I like it so much that as soon as I was done, I went and bought another book in the series."

" Enjoyable read that followed many different characters through many different decades. Kept my interest. Would try another book by this author. "
— Jen, 2/17/2014" Great mystery! Burke handles the shifting timelines well. It was a real page-turner. "
— Heather, 2/2/2014" This was the first Jan Burke novel I read. I picked it up at the airport on the way to start my honeymoon. It was so good my husband was getting annoyed at me for reading all the time! I have subsequently bought and borrowed numerous Jan Burke novels and they are all good. I will admit though that the Irene Kelley series starts to get tedious after about 4 of them. This is #9 in the series but a first read for me and it was suspenseful, engaging and very well written. "

— Gail, 11/19/2012" If you have read the Irene Kelly series, this book ties the history of the characters together. Starting with Conn O'Connor as the newbie, it moves into Kelly's first days at the newspaper. As with most of Jan Burke's books, it is not light on characters. "
