He is in the dark…

New Jersey State Police officer Doug Brock has been after criminal Nicholas Bennett for years. When Bennett kills someone close to Doug, however, the whole investigation spirals out of control—as does Doug’s own life. He’s put on indefinite suspension from the force, but Doug still can’t let the case go, and he ends up sacrificing everything, including his fiancée, to continue working on it off the books. Soon he discovers something big—important enough to involve the FBI—and calls his former partner on the force for help.

While a killer is hiding in plain sight.

Doug’s phone call ends abruptly with a bang—literally. He’s eventually found in a hotel room, shot and in critical condition. After coming out of his coma, Doug has no memory of the case or even the last several years of his life. But the pull of what he once discovered is too strong to resist, and he finds himself immersed in a desperate search for truth once again—no matter what mortal danger lies in store.

Quotes & Awards

  • “This gripping standalone from Rosenfelt (Without Warning) tells a crackerjack story replete with wry observations and witty and totally convincing dialogue…The pressure to halt a catastrophic event while he struggles to recreate his former life makes this an irresistible read.”

    Publishers Weekly

  • “Short chapters and shifting points of view keep the ‘beat the clock’ pace moving. Brock is a solid detective who doesn’t let his ignorance of iPhones or his own address slow him down. A good bet for fans of both fast-paced procedurals and intelligence-agency intrigue.”

  • “[An] entertaining cop thriller competently narrated by Jeff Steitzer…[who] hits all the right tones, capturing both the drama and the humor of the book. His voice for Nate, Doug’s sidekick, takes some getting used to simply because it’s so very deep. Steitzer doesn’t take this book too seriously, and neither should the listener. It’s strictly entertainment, and that’s how Steitzer plays it.”
