Andy Carpenter gains possession of an adorable Bernese puppy whose owner was brutally murdered. Few can rival Andy's affection for dogs, and he will do whatever it takes to insure that this little pup doesn't fall into the wrong hands. However, his playful new friend is valued by several people, many of whom are willing to resort to violence to get what they want. It will take more than Andy's usual courtroom theatrics to save this dog, including a little help from his beloved golden retriever, Tara. Andy soon discovers that anyone around him is in danger, including his long-time girlfriend Laurie, and he will have to muster all of his wits to save those he holds most dear.

"I can't believe I never read this series until just a month or 2 ago, and now here I am caught up with it except for the newest one which just came out! I love Andy and all other characters in the series, even "Hatchet", and I think this one would definitely be one of my favorites. Andy gets involved in a dog custody case, at Hatchet's behest, which turns into a double case. The dog, Waggy, is a central character in the case and the story takes a lot of twists and turns. A great read!"

" Rosenfelt's love of dogs is reflected in this great series! "
— Marylou, 2/19/2014" I thought this book was cute and humorus. I don't know if I will continue to read this author. This was a new author that I tried and I'm glad that I tried him. But his writing style doesn't really reflect my reading style. "
— Jill, 2/3/2014" This mystery has a defense lawyer as a protagonist, but it's okay because he's hilariously sarcastic. The courtroom drama was fun and interesting and the characters right up my alley. I plan on going back and reading more of the series. "
— Megan, 1/20/2014" Funny, good mystery, nice character development...what else is there to say? Rosenfeldt delivers yet again. "
— Hobart, 1/10/2014" I like the pace of this author. He makes an effort to keep things moving. "
— Kat, 1/3/2014" This was a very quick and enjoyable read for me. It was a fun, lighthearted murder mystery with some interesting characters and a couple of dogs. How could it go wrong? There were a couple of unexpected twists for me and although I often predict the bad guy before the end of these types of novels, I wasn't completely right in this one, which is always a pleasant surprise. I recommend it to dog lovers and people who enjoy a fun mystery. "
— Pam, 12/23/2013" What is it about New Jersey? Another book set in New Jersey full of great one-liners. And the 'sleuth' is an attorney who besides being quite a wiseass, can afford to pick his cases and seems to only pick cases involving dogs. "
— Diane, 12/11/2013" Andy Carpenter, his dog Tara, and the other characters in this series of legal mysteries, are so appealing that I forgive the thin plot and less- than-stellar prose. "
— Lucy, 12/9/2013" I just really enjoy this serious-especially after reading a dark or challenging novel. "
— Jayne, 11/28/2013" For those of you who love pet stories - this story isn't really about an animal as much as it is another in the series of Andy Carpenter stories. He happens to like animals and owns a well mannered dog named Tara. Andy Carpenter stories are light easy reads. "
— Betsy, 11/17/2013" Excellent; Continuing character: Andy Carpenter; Andy is first assigned to determine who should get custody of a dog whose owner has been murdered; then gets more involved as he represents the accused son of the victim and his girlfriend is shot "
— Joe, 8/22/2013" A mystery writer with a sense of humor!! Great one-liners as well as an intriguing mystery. "
— Sara, 8/6/2013" Loved the presence of the dogs in a mystery, however, the plot didn't hold me. Found myself skimming through a lot of it. "
— Charlotte, 7/17/2013" really liked all 8. Mysteries, people get killed but not dark and gruesome. "
— Mike, 7/13/2013" This book is laugh out loud funny and also an excellent story with wonderful characters and intriguing mystery. I love this series and New Tricks is one of the best. Thank you David Rosenfelt for brightening up my reading experiences. "
— Phyllis, 7/11/2013" Reading these books is like comfort food. Always feels like home. "
— Damoroso, 5/13/2013" Another dog & lawyer grabber. Murders, wrongful accused client and Tara, Andy, Laura, and Waggy all work to help DA & the FBI solve the case. "
— Dave, 2/26/2013" Rosenfelt is usually pretty enjoyable even if slightly predictable. Marcus is usually good for a couple of laughs. His relationship with his girlfriend and dog gets a little tedious. "
— Herzog, 1/28/2013" This author is so refreshing----as are his characters. He has a wonderful sense of humor, and his main character (Andy Carpenter) has a terrific sardonic, wry wit. Plus it's an awesome story line! "
— Barbara, 10/31/2012" First time I have listened to an audio book in this series and the reader was quite good. I like Andy, but sometimes the humor gets laid on a bit too thick--i.e., it stops being funny as it sometimes comes at the expense of the story. "
— Spuddie, 6/11/2012" Margaret at the local Carnegie library recommended this. Turns out it's number seven in a series. Enjoyed it - enough to get the first in the series. "
— Jim, 5/6/2012" I enjoyed every minute of this book, it was fun. "
— Lajuan, 4/3/2012" I GIVE THIS BOOK 4 BOW WOWS! MY LOVE OF DOGS AND THE LAW KEPT ME TURNING THE PAGES. I ENJOYED THE AUTHORS USE OF HUMOR AND SARCASM. THIS WAS THE FIRST DAVID ROSENFELT BOOK I HAVE READ AND I WILL DEFINITELY BE READING MORE. "
— Cynthia, 10/4/2011" I enjoyed every minute of this book, it was fun. "
— Lajuan, 6/25/2011" I liked this one the best so far, probably because it was more dog centric. I love me a good puppy story! "
— Jeffrey, 6/17/2011" Another mystery novel with a dog at the center - Two of my favorite things in one! Couple of great twisty, windy plot devices, too. Had me guessing til the very end. "
— Kay, 5/13/2011" Good, not as good as some of the series, but worth reading. "
— Colleen, 4/21/2011" Good (relatively) light-hearted fun, like all of the books in this series. Not as much of some of the regulars as I'd like, but Waggy is adorable. "
— Andrea, 4/5/2011" I love Andy Carpenter, and I love the way David Rosenfelt writes. It's not heart-pounding stuff; it's fun...and I like fun. He and I have very similar senses of humor and we both evidently love dogs. "
— Charley, 2/23/2011" This mystery has a defense lawyer as a protagonist, but it's okay because he's hilariously sarcastic. The courtroom drama was fun and interesting and the characters right up my alley. I plan on going back and reading more of the series. "
— Megan, 1/13/2011" I loved this book. Andy gets roped into a case he really didnt want to do. He has lots of help from his dog, his friend (who barely speaks) and his lady friend. Murder and mayhem, great combination with a bit of humor. "
— Joann, 11/20/2010" LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Andy Carpenter series.... nuf said "
— Bridget, 11/17/2010" I love this series. Nice light easy reading, with good plot lines "
— Angela, 11/7/2010" Really good. I like the Andy Carpenter books. "
— Deb, 10/31/2010" Blech. Definitely won't read any of the others. Didn't care of the style of writing, the characters, or the plot. Silly error where he mentions that she was shot in the thigh hitting her carotid. Couldn't get past that. All in all, I just don't think it was particularly well written. "
— Lisa, 9/5/2010" This was a fun book. Especially if you are a dog lover. The mystery was good, I didn't figure out who the murderer was until it was revealed at the end. "
— Lynne, 9/3/2010" Margaret at the local Carnegie library recommended this. Turns out it's number seven in a series. Enjoyed it - enough to get the first in the series. "
