Warner (1920–2008) was the author of the Pulitzer Prize–winner Beautiful Swimmers: Watermen, Crabs, and the Chesapeake Bay and Distant Water: The Fate of the North Atlantic Fisherman, which was nominated for National Book Critics Circle Award. He formerly was assistant secretary for public service at the Smithsonian Institution.
