Welcome to the Pendleton. Built as a tycoon’s dream home in the 1880s and converted to luxury condominiums not quite a century later, the Gilded Age palace at the summit of Shadow Hill is a sanctuary for its fortunate residents. Scant traces remain of the episodes of madness, suicide, mass murder—and whispers of things far worse—that have scarred its grandeur almost from the beginning.

But now inexplicable shadows caper across walls, security cameras relay impossible images, phantom voices mutter in strange tongues, not-quite-human figures lurk in the basement, elevators plunge into unknown depths. With each passing hour a terrifying certainty grows: Whatever drove the Pendleton’s past occupants to their unspeakable fates is at work again. And as nightmare visions become real, as a deadly tide begins to engulf them, the people at 77 Shadow Street will find the key to humanity’s future … if they can survive to use it.

" I don't know if it's me or him, but this took me a long time (for me) to read. I enjoyed the story, but could easily put it down (there was certainly enough stopping points to do that). I guess I just enjoy the romances more, now, so maybe it IS me! "

" I agree with Allen ... Koontz had me drawn in then WHAM it ended. I give it a 4 still because the story kept me engaged. "

    " a little disappointing "

" I like Dean Koontz; however, this book annoyed me and I think the title is misleading. I still had to read to the end to see what happened, but it bored me. Except how the characters figured out a way to blame one person for all of the death around them and it made sense. The idea was interesting but I thought this would have been a great book for a series so that there was a bit more history prior to this installment. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Sarah Mac | 2/6/2014

" This was okay, but too many characters and I wasn't expecting it to be the kind of supernatural that it was. Not my kind of book. "

" A really good book that kept you guessin guntil the end to know what happens. Unexpected and a delight. "

" Good book, the suspense ascends the moment you read the first chapter. He had a way for drawing you in at the very beginning. "

" GREAT BOOK IF YOU ARE A KOONTZ FAN LIKE ME. ONLY PROBLEM WAS SO MANY CHARACTERS. I HAD TO KEEP GOING BACK TO CHECK. OTHERWISE GREAT. "

" Wow! If I didn't know better I would have thought it was an earlier Stephen King book. Koontz has written a horror book that you can visualize just too well. If I was prone to nightmares, this book would have done it~!!! "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Vicki G | 12/23/2013

    " A page-turner all the way through. "

" I'm a Koontz fan, but this one has too many characters for me to follow ... after getting halfway through the book and not really enjoying it, I give up. "

" I would really give this book 3 1/2 stars if I could. It was a good story, but scary! There were also quite a few characters to keep track of, which I normally don't mind, but I found some of them lacking in development. "
