Past midnight, Chyna Shepard, twenty-six, gazes out a moonlit window, unable to sleep on her first night in the Napa Valley home of her best friend’s family. Instinct proves reliable. A murderous sociopath, Edgler Foreman Vess, has entered the house, intent on killing everyone inside. A self-proclaimed “homicidal adventurer,” Vess lives only to satisfy all appetites as they arise, to immerse himself in sensation, to live without fear, remorse, or limits, to live with intensity. Chyna is trapped in his deadly orbit.
Chyna is a survivor, toughened by a lifelong struggle for safety and self-respect. Now she will be tested as never before. At first her sole aim is to get out alive—until, by chance, she learns the identity of Vess’s next intended victim, a faraway innocent only she can save. Driven by a newly discovered thirst for meaning beyond mere self-preservation, Chyna musters every inner resource she has to save an endangered girl . . . as moment by moment, the terrifying threat of Edgler Foreman Vess intensifies.

"This wasn't as scary as I expected it to be, unlike The Taking. More like nail-biting suspenseful. What I really like about Dean Koontz novels are the adept description of its heroes' (and in this case, of the villain's as well) thought process as they do the things that will get them out of the tight spot they were thrown in. I understand that it will throw some people off, but I find it really cool, un-corny, and un-boring. If you want a no nonsense suspense novel, please do grab a copy of this. It's worth every dime or peso. :)"
— Marco (5 out of 5 stars)
“Chills…to the core and establishes Koontz as a master.”
— Associated Press“A taut, nerve-tingling thriller from page one.”
— Christian Science Monitor" Very good read. Kept me going all the way through. The title of the book couldn't be any more perfect. "
— Robin, 11/4/2016" This book was a page turner...one word...Intense! "
— Nicole, 2/20/2014" This book scared the crap out of me. Dean Koontz has a tendency to be outlnadish with his books and characters but this particular book describes a serial killer that is chillingly real.. When I finally put the book down I had nightmares for 3 days. "
— Lainie, 2/18/2014" truely lives up to the title "
— Chyenne, 2/14/2014" One of my favourite thrillers! Definitely my favourite by Koontz. The title of this book is pretty self explanatory, from beginning to end it is pure intensity. I loved the heroine in this book and the story itself was so good, I could not put it down. "
— Jax, 2/13/2014" I think Dean Koontz is the Jane Austin of mystery. "
— Connie, 2/8/2014" When was the last time you read a book that made you shout out loud at the main character? That made your heart race and set you so on edge that you jumped at every creek in the floorboards or had to make a conscious effort to relax all the muscles you've tensed while reading? This appropriately named book did all of the above for me, making for a thrilling read once I got past the implausibility of the scenario and the uneasiness of spending half the book inside the head of a disgustingly lucid serial killer. "
— Heather, 2/3/2014" Scared the CRAP out of me!! "
— Mindy, 2/1/2014" This was kind of hard for me to read because it's about this creepy serial killer and it's pretty graphic, (it even gave me a nightmare)I only kept reading to make sure he got what was coming to him in the end. "
— Manda, 1/18/2014" One of his better books. It was realistically scary and lived up to its name--"Intensity" "
— Cheryl, 1/13/2014" Non stop terror from the beginning to the end. This book was glued to my fingers and I finished it in one day. One of his best works. "
— Vadim, 1/9/2014" It was a bit gruesome in parts, but I liked some of the others so much I gave it a read and it is certainly one of his best. "
— Carol, 1/8/2014" Dean created and showed how intense this character is. Quite good! "
— Wayne, 1/2/2014" Not my average fair when it comes to reading, but I found the suspense in this Knootz's thriller compelling. "
— Travis, 12/31/2013" This book is really terrifying. "
— Silverspringsrr, 12/24/2013" Loved this book! COULDN'T put it down! "
— Nicki, 12/8/2013" One of Koontz most intense and entertaining thrillers. I own this one. "
— Craig, 12/8/2013" This was my first Koontz and I LOVED it! I've read this like 10 times and it never gets old! I still find myself on the edge of my seat sweating at each turn of events! I think its probably been close to ten years ago I read it for the first time too! "
— Nikki, 4/23/2013" Scared the crap out of me! I really mean it! "
— Lori, 2/2/2013" This is a solid 4 star book with a great start and finish, worth reading especially since it's a quick read. A little predictable but still enjoyable. "
— Mike, 1/18/2013" Wow!! Intensity is the best name of this book cause that's what it was intense!! My heart pounded the whole time and I had to stop myself from reading ahead. "
— Alma, 12/20/2012" My stomach is in knots already and I've barely completed the first chapter!! Love! This book is rather INTENSE! "
— Danielle, 12/12/2012" A present and the only Koontz I will ever read.... "
— Jess, 10/24/2012" Intense. From page one till the end. Fucking intense. It is a Dean Koontz book. But an awesome one. "
— Ashvin, 8/22/2012" This book is a page turner. Couldn't put it down! "
— Domani, 12/6/2011" This book is amazing.. what i like about most of Dean Koontz books is that they nearly all take place over a short space of time. Intensity is over 24 hours. which in my opinion makes it fast paces and never never boring "
— Gobnait, 11/12/2011" One of my favorite Dean Koontz books of all time. Second only to "The Husband". This book is exactly what it says... Intensity. "
— Kaja, 9/19/2011" 24 hours of pure wild survival instincts!!! "
— Adarsh, 8/15/2011" I hvae re-read this book several times and each time my heart pounds and I cannot put it down. literally. I dont think I get a good breath until I finish it. "
— Carole, 7/2/2011" Sometimes I think Dean Koontz has lost his mind. I think he is a very sick man. I really love his work, but sometimes I think he has to go to another place to be able to write some of the things that he writes. "
— Kim, 6/29/2011" This was a good novel with a good villain, but it was too bizarre and sadistic for me. The hero/heroines were okay. Overall, it's not one I'd recommend to readers unaccustomed to Dean Koontz's novels. "
— Steven, 6/24/2011" I can barely remember what this was about....after Lightning, most of his books left me wishing for more....Lightning. "
— Arlene, 6/12/2011" This book I never forgot and like Twilight, it really affected me during my childhood. Awsome book and one of my favourites. "
— 5/16/2011" Mostly I thought this book was dumb, but I did want to see how it ended. I wouldn't read anothe rDean Koontz unless someone I trusted recommended one. "
— Jenn, 5/11/2011" People who were brought back from death come back with a demon in one case and an angel in the other. Kind of creepy and a pretty good read. "
— Jake, 5/6/2011" I liked it, but it scared the stuffing out of me and I'll never forget it! "
— Becky, 5/3/2011" I actually finished this book last week. A very good thriller exploring what can happen when modern medicine can bring you back to life after dying and what horror you could bring back with you. "
— Cheryl, 4/30/2011" I read up to page thirty something and could not get into it that much. I will put this book on hold until I gain the ability to just bite the bullet one day and sit and read as much as I can in one sitting. "
— Lady, 4/26/2011" This book was somewhat interesting as a story, but the characters seemed one dimensional and the plot was forced. "
— Greathornedowl, 4/12/2011" Kept me reading to the end...One of his better books in my opinion!! "
— Karen, 11/21/2010" Dean Koontz hooked me in the first to pages of the book and doesn't provide any slow or boring parts. I had no struggle reading the long book for all the pages provided excitement and mystery and ended it with a great ending that is memorable for any reader <br/> "
— Isaiah, 10/21/2010" I actually stopped reading it and got rid of it. Serial killer books are just not for me I guess...don't have the stomach for it. "
