The People of Sparks picks up where The City of Ember leaves off. Lina and Doon have emerged from the underground city to the exciting new world above, and it isn’t long before they are followed by the other inhabitants of Ember. The Emberites soon come across a town where they are welcomed, fed, and given places to sleep. But the town’s resources are limited and it isn’t long before resentment begins to grow between the two groups. When anonymous acts of vandalism push them toward violence, it’s up to Lina and Doon to discover who’s behind the vandalism and why, before it’s too late.

"Wow, I was kind of blown away by this book. I would love to at least read this book with my class some day, if not write a whole unit on it. It could definitely be used with younger readers (I'm thinking fourth or fifth grade) because the heavy themes are right out there in the open. I was a tad frustrated as an adult reading it because there is no subtlety whatsoever, but it would really work with children I think. War, poverty, decision-making, right and wrong, etc. could be taught using this book. It's more powerful than its prequel, The City of Ember. I've got the third one on hold at the library and I am looking forward to reading it."

" great book 10/10 "
— 2/10/2016" The first book near bored me but it caught my interest enough to read book two. So glad I did! The people of Ember are given a new problem....no longer worried of the lights going out they must now figure out how to live in a world scarred by horrible tragedies. They must relearn everything all the while trying to make friends with the town that took them in. Doon and Lina are quite the two little heroes and learning what the see and discover is fascinating. Nit makes one realize what we take for granted today. Never say I'll take care of it tomorrow because one day the tomorrow that comes may not be the tomorrow you know. "
— Michelle, 2/20/2014" The second book of the Ember series picks up where the first left off. Now finally outside the city Doon and Lina find a settlement of people who are reluctant to take in the people of ember but do so anyway. Tensions begin to rise as accussations are made about the people of Ember. Food begins to dwindle and it seems as if the town of Sparks will fall into chaos. "
— Andre, 2/12/2014" The sequel to the City of Ember. It didn't have quite the same pace and intensity of the first book in the series, but still an enjoyable read and a good lesson in cooperation. Kept my 8 year old engaged. "
— Ali, 1/1/2014" This was better than the first, in my opinion :) Very good read "
— person, 12/24/2013" Its not as good as the first book, The City of Ember. But its still good. "
— Sofia, 12/20/2013" Book #2 in the Ember series...as my kids battle each other and plot revenge - I found using examples from this book helpful for peaceful living and how wars and misunderstandings happen in a post apocalyptic re-emerging society. "
— Kari, 12/20/2013" Great follow up here to The City of Ember. Very enjoyable light read. "
— Blueberry, 12/20/2013" What a great story. I think we can all learn a lesson from this book. "
— Trena, 12/15/2013" It was just alright. The latter half really picked up and hit on some excellent points about how conflicts begin in a way kids can understand. The final conflict scene was very emotional. However, overall, the book needed better editing for better focus. "
— Wendi, 12/15/2013" I really liked this book, it serves as a reminder how we take everything in this material world for granted and how would we survive if it all disappeared! "
— Wynter, 12/10/2013" After reading the City of Ember aloud, my students were dying to read the second book, The People of Sparks. I have used it to teach skills such as predictions, making connections, and summarizing. "
— Kara, 11/25/2013" Mehh. The first book was better "
— Summer, 11/18/2013" This was a great book! Not as good as the first one but very good nonetheless. "
— Tessa, 11/13/2013" I didn't like People of Sparks nearly as much as I liked City of Ember. This book is more of a social commentary than a dystopian adventure. "
— Courtney, 10/12/2013" Not the same drama as first book but still very interesting. "
— Natalie, 7/28/2013" This had some good spots, but it was very hard to stick with it. A bit bummed that it wasn't as interesting as book 1. It was a clean read though and that was very nice. "
— Ariana, 5/1/2013" Read in one day. Couldn't put it down!! "
— Laura, 3/20/2013" #2 in the series my son in grade 5 was reading, very good story...enjoyed the book "
— Christa, 2/27/2013" The people of ember have escaped ember. Now they must find shelter and quick. Will they find shelter and will they people they find like them? "
— Soha, 1/14/2013" The second book, people of the Sparks, is just as good as the first book. It introduces new characters and is fun to read. "

— Jillian, 12/26/2012" My favorite from the trilogy. "
— Janette, 11/19/2011" This book was really good but I thought that it really had to live up to the first book. I personally thought that it was kind of a let-down compared to the first book. That should not stop anyone from reading it, though. "
— Isabella, 8/31/2011" Saw the movie first, then read the first book. Was jazzed to discover that the series continued for THREE MORE BOOKS! in heaven. This was a lovely continuation. "
— Elle, 8/14/2011" Liked this sequel to "City of Ember" even more than the first book of the series. "
— Camille, 6/19/2011" I really liked this book. I liked the characters, the plot, the overall message. "
— Marva, 5/23/2011" Despite many tries, I've never been able to get through this book. I loved City of Ember, but The People of Sparks has so many annoying characters, slow plot and stupidity to it that I could never get farther than half way. "
— Kate, 5/18/2011" A great sequel to City of Ember. I found it quite thought provoking. "
— Latisha, 5/17/2011" Liked this book as well. I have to keep reminding myself though that it's a young adult novel. Can guess the ending and what's going to happen, but was still pretty good. Just not as good as the "City of Ember". Quick easy read though and was somewhat entertaining. "
— Kathy, 5/17/2011" I loved City of Ember so much, once they leave it's really hard to recapture that magic once they're on the surface in the ordinary world...but after awhile, I got into it and ended up enjoying it a lot. "
— Elise, 5/14/2011" Truthfully this book was a bit boring. But if you are reading the whole series you should read it because it has a lot of info that you need to know for when you read the next books. "
— K.Q., 5/12/2011" I don´t know how about you, but I found it a bit boring. "
— Eliza, 5/10/2011" it was ok, but not as good as the first and the first wasn't that great "
— Karen, 5/4/2011" This was 2.5 stars. Not as good as the first, but not a total waste of time. "
— Sarah, 4/30/2011" i think it was ok <br/> "
