It’s been several months since Lina and Doon escaped the dying city of Ember and, along with the rest of their people, joined the town of Sparks. Now, struggling through the harsh winter aboveground, they find an unusual book. Torn up and missing most of its pages, it alludes to a mysterious device from before the Disaster, which they believe is still in Ember. Together, Lina and Doon must go back underground to retrieve what was lost and bring light to a dark world.

In the fourth Book of Ember, bestselling author Jeanne DuPrau juxtaposes yet another action-packed adventure with powerful themes about hope, learning, and the search for truth.

Listener Opinions

" This was the final installation of the Ember series, and while it was not as good as the original book (City of Ember), it was also not as bad as the third book (Prophet of Yonwood). This book just didn't have the same magical quality that the original story had, so I wasn't enthralled. Overall, satisfying end to the series but not great literature. "

" This was a good ending to this series. I like these characters and it's nice to see them come full circle. "

" I love this book series, a nice young adult series that made a pretty good story. I think there were way more places to go with it, I don't like how she just wrote in some epilogues without leaving herself room for more of the story but I'm assuming she was just done with Lina and Doon. Too bad, I liked them. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Tara Schaafsma | 2/4/2014

" This was pretty good. It's the fourth in a series. I loved the first one. The second 2 not so much. This is in-between. The same kids as in the first book, after emerging from the underground city, find some technology left for them and have to figure out how it works. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Lioba | 1/19/2014

" The beginning was kinda slow - mainly because this is the 4th book in a series and new readers needed to be introduced to the characters first and put up to date shortly on what happened before to the people of Ember. Then there was an adventurous part that would have deserved 5 stars. The ending was a bit lame again though. So 4 stars altogether. "

" it was amazing it had spence thirlls and advencher it in my opinion it was the best of the books of ember I would remcond this book to aneyone. I lernd that if you stick together you get more saccomplicled "

" The final installment of the City of Ember series. Lina and Doon head back to Ember for supplies as the city of Sparks in barely able to make it through the winter with the extra people from Ember. Also another mystery from the last 8 pages of a book that Doon got ahold of talks about things he and Lina don't understand, but are sure it solves the future's problem of lack of electricity. Good finish to the series. "
