Publisher Description

Marguerite Henry’s beloved story of a wild horse’s gentle colt—winner of a Newbery Honor!

On the island of Chincoteague, off the coasts of Virginia and Maryland, lives a centuries-old band of wild ponies. Among them is the most mysterious of all, Phantom, a rarely-seen mare that eludes all efforts to capture her—that is, until a young boy and girl lay eyes on her and determine that they can’t live without her.

The frenzied roundup that follows on the next Pony Penning Day does indeed bring Phantom into their lives, in a way they never would have suspected. Phantom would forever be a creature of the wild. But her gentle, loyal colt Misty is another story altogether...

"This was a family read aloud. We enjoyed it. It was my copy from when I was a kid. Fun story with some adventure. Emphasizes family, hard work, goal setting. The dialogue is fun to read out loud and the illustrations are cute. My kids begged for me to continue reading. "

" When I was little, I was horse crazy. I read every book possible about horses. I know I read Misty, but I didn't remember it as a favorite. A reread revealed why: the little girl isn't allowed to participate in the round-up because she isn't a boy. She shares her brother's dream of buying Phantom at the next round-up, and she works extra chores to add to their savings. When it comes to the big race, a pull on a wishbone gives the boy the right to ride Phantom. I always felt as though he should have let his sister have that bit of glory since he got to do everything else! "
