Publisher Description

Have faith. I will find you.

Former NYPD detective Charlie "Bird" Parker is on the verge of madness. Tortured by the unsolved slayings of his wife and young daughter, he is a man consumed by guilt, regret, and the desire for revenge.

When his former partner asks him to track down a missing girl, Parker finds himself drawn into a world beyond his imagining -- one where thirty year old killings remain shrouded in fear and lies, a world where the ghosts of the dead torment the living, a world haunted by the murderer responsible for the deaths in his family, a serial killer unlike any other, a monster who uses the human body to create works of art and takes faces as his prize. But the search awakens buried instincts in Parker: instincts for survival, for compassion, for love, and, ultimately, for killing.

Aided by a beautiful young psychologist and a pair of career criminals, he becomes the bait in a trap set in the humid bayous of Louisiana, a trap that threatens the lives of everyone in its reach. Driven by visions of the dead and the voice of an old black psychic who met a terrible end, Parker must seek a final, brutal confrontation with a murderer who has moved beyond all notions of humanity, who has set out to create a hell on earth: the serial killer known only as the Travelling Man.

In the tradition of classic American detective fiction, Every Dead Thing is a tense, richly-plotted thriller, filled with memorable characters and gripping action. It is also a profoundly moving novel, concerned with the nature of loyalty, of love, and of forgiveness. Lyrical and terrifying, it is an ambitious debut, triumphantly realized.

"John Connolly is a great thriller writer, and I especially like his character Charlie Parker, ex-cop, hardened alcoholic who lost his wife and daughter in a vicious double murder by a mutilating psychopath. This book has an interesting twist: Parker has to solve one crime of a similar nature in order to prepare himself to find the psycho who murdered his family. Every Dead Thing had enough twists and turns (and a less-than-100-percent closure for Parker) to make this novel a very engaging read."

" The deeply lyrical and at times surreal prose is certainly a highlight, but the central mystery is original and captivating, buoyed by fully realized and emotionally believable characters. "

" I read a lot of thrillers every year, and Every Dead Thing is one of the darkest I've ever encountered. Having sampled later entries in the Charlie Parker series, I became curious about the traumatic event that shattered his life, the horrendous murders of his wife and daughter. I got more than I bargained for. This intro to the series opens with that event, and "grisly" doesn't begin to describe the scene. There are no leads, and six months later, Parker, having resigned from his job as an NYC homicide detective, embarks upon his quest to find and punish the killer. Along the way, he bounces between NY and pre-Katrina New Orleans, learning from a Creole wise woman that it's probably someone known as "the Traveling Man". This is a rapidly paced, violent book with a high body count, so sickenly graphic that I had to start skipping pages of detail. Now I know what motivates Parker, who becomes a man willing to commit what he considers justifiable murder. It will take a while to get those images out of my head. "

" Wow! What a first book. It should have been his first three books! For me the whole thing was a little too much of everything. Still, after this first book I am all ready to tackle the second almost immediately so he must be doing something right. "

" I loved John Connolly's Book of Lost Things. I've had this book on my shelf for a couple of years now and when I finally decided to read it and diving into it head-first, being that I loved his Book of Lost Things. I jumped into a pool with no water, unfortunately. I didn't like this one at all. I'm highly surprised I didn't put this down and move on to the next on my read list mid-way through. I also saw the "killer" halfway through. So of course, when I got to the end, I was highly disappointed. Disappointed and depressed. I've only had one other book depress me this much and that book was Hater. I hated Hater and I pretty much hated this book just as equally. I've heard this series gets better, but being that I was so let down with this book, I don't think I'm going to continue on with the Charlie Parker series. There are way too many other books and writers to give a shot and if I want a definite enjoyable read, I'll just stick to Don Winslow if I want a suspense, keep me somewhat guessing, with cool-ass characters, type of book. So far, I haven't read anything that comes close to Don Winslow. He, thus far, is my go to author, most definitely. And thought for sure, just maybe, John Connolly would join that rank as well. Well, it's on to the next one. Hold up, give me my money back, please! "

" This was a fast paced thriller with lots of twists and turns. It had a lot going on, almost like three different stories. It has a small supernatural element in it that was for the most part believable. I was shocked at who the killer was. I will definitely be reading the rest of this series. "
