Publisher Description

A GRIPPING RACETRACK THRILLER FROM THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF DRIVING FORCE AND COMEBACK

THE STAKES ARE DEADLY AT STRATTON PARK

Architect and family man Lee Morris never gave much thought to the shares he inherited of the Stratton Park racecourse, the multi-million dollar property owned by the powerful Stratton family. His mother had first received the shares to keep her quiet about the abuse she had suffered at the hands of her first husband, Keith Stratton. Now, much to Lee's chagrin, he is being drawn into the thick of the Stratton family squabbles as they wage a furious debate over the future of the race track.

So when Lee packs his six sons into his renovated old bus to visit the racetrack, he finds himself embroiled in a supremely dangerous game that extends much deeper than horse racing. And perhaps too late, Lee realizes his involvement in the racetrack may cost him more than he bargained for...It may cost him his life...

“Francis’ finely drawn characters make an excellent cast for Simon Jones. He uses lightly characterized voices for each Stratton family member—each more difficult, stubborn or pigheaded than the next. The listener gets most of the character development from these voices as the story is cut to essential plot lines…If you've read the book, the audio can extend your association with the characters, if not, it may send you off to enjoy the text.”

Quotes

  • “Gripping.”

    — New York Times
  • “One of his best.”

    — Philadelphia Inquirer
  • “A smash hit novel…from a rare and magical talent—who never writes the same story twice.”

    — San Diego Union-Tribune
  • “Dick Francis knows horses, but in this deeply satisfying novel of intrigue, he shows that he also has a handle on architecture, construction, even crowd control…Francis’ deft plotting and sharp characterization are, as usual, on the mark…And as usual, he excels in exposing some of England’s nastier class habits, meanwhile affirming the morality of his protagonist.”

    — Publishers Weekly
  • “The personalities in Francis’ tale are strong and the action swift. Simon Jones narrates well, and the abridgment is unobtrusive. This will do well in general collections.”

    — Library Journal
  • “Francis’ newest suspenser is typical not only in its racetrack setting but in its doubling of the hero’s mildly dysfunctional family with another family of deep-dyed villains…Francis’ biggest coup here is his success in delineating shades and varieties of wickedness in the superbly monstrous Strattons…This is the most elaborate and satisfying of his recent books—a winner from the starting gate to the last hurdle.”
