Publisher Description

From the New York Times bestselling author who Lisa Kleypas hails as "too good to be true" comes the first book in her beloved Maiden Lane series.

A MAN CONTROLLED BY HIS DESIRES . . .

Infamous for his wild, sensual needs, Lazarus Huntington, Lord Caire, is searching for a savage killer in St. Giles, London's most notorious slum. Widowed Temperance Dews knows St. Giles like the back of her hand-she's spent a lifetime caring for its inhabitants at the foundling home her family established. Now that home is at risk . . .

A WOMAN HAUNTED BY HER PAST . . .

Caire makes a simple offer-in return for Temperance's help navigating the perilous alleys of St. Giles, he will introduce her to London's high society so that she can find a benefactor for the home. But Temperance may not be the innocent she seems, and what begins as cold calculation soon falls prey to a passion that neither can control-one that may well destroy them both.

"This is the first book in an outstanding series by a Master (or rather Misstress!) storyteller. In this series she spins amazing tales of the people of London in the 18th century bringing out the full richness of that city. The characters are also beautifully crafted internally with a myriad of shadows and nuances, good and bad, no angels with a few devils. All having multi-layered interactions as human beings. The other thing I like about Ms. Hotye is authenticity. Lord Caire is a tormented man who has some peculiar sexual proclivities and when the writer says ‘peculiar’ she delivers. Mrs. Temperance Dews comes from a totally different background. Not only is she not nobility but she was raised in a very strict household. The two come together because they make a deal that benefits both of them. Passion was not involved in that deal but it erupted between them like a volcano and they both can’t help delve into their own sensuality. Love grows, of course, and binds them despite the divide. There is sweet redemption for several characters at the end. "
