Turtle Moon transports the listener to Verity, Florida, a place where anything can happen during the month of May, when migrating sea turtles come to town, mistaking the glow of the streetlights for the moon.

A young single mother is murdered in her apartment and her baby is gone. Keith, a 12-year-old boy in the same apartment building - the self-styled meanest boy in town - also disappears.

In pursuit of the baby, the boy and the killer, are Keith's divorced mother and a cop who himself was once considered the meanest boy in town. Their search leads them down the humid byways of a Florida populated almost exclusively by people from somewhere else; emotional refugees seeking sanctuary along the swampy coast. • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Joanne | 1/31/2014

" The story was good, and the boy's character interesting. The book didn't need the constant flights of fancy. A child who cried pebbles instead of tears, etc. Not clever or amusing, not needed for the story. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Rachel C. | 1/30/2014

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Mandy | 12/9/2010

" I definately liked this better than "At Risk" by the same author. The story was pretty simple, and it was a quick read. I'd recommend it to others readily, and may even re-read at some point, though maybe not. Enough suspense and content to keep me going, but not very complex. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Anna | 11/26/2010

" Evocative, filled with rich description and elements of the supernatural. Signficant parts of the plot fail to stand up to scrutiny, but somehow that doesn't seem to matter.

I read a lot of Alice Hoffman as a teenager, with mixed responses. This is undoubtedly one of her best. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Daphne | 10/2/2010

" As someone said, "it was like a bad lifetime movie." Lots of unnecessary characters and haphazard unfinished plot lines. Completely unsatisfactory ending. "
