Publisher Description

For more than a century, the small town of Haddan, Massachusetts, has been divided, as if a line was drawn down the center of Main Street, separating those born and bred in the village from those who attend the prestigious Haddan School. But one October night the two worlds are thrust together due to an inexplicable death, and the town’s divided history is revealed in all its complexity. The lives of everyone involved are unraveled: from Carlin Leander, the fifteen-year-old girl who is as loyal as she is proud, to Betsy Chase, a woman running from her own destiny; from August Pierce, a boy who unexpectedly finds courage in his darkest hour, to Abel Grey, the police officer who refuses to let unspeakable actions—both past and present—slide by without notice. Entertainment Weekly has declared that Alice Hoffman’s worlds are “replete with miracles” and The Boston Globe has praised her “iridescent prose, taut narrative suspense, and alluring atmosphere.”

“An inventive, romantic, and insightful storyteller, Hoffman touches everyone and everything with her magic wand, illuminating the power of emotion and exquisite mysteries of life.” —Booklist

"An absolute joy of a read, a page turner from the first word to the last. The strength is in the magnificent story, but Ms Hoffman is not an objective narrator- the fun is in the way she judges when she feels like it, and can use the pen like a dagger on her villains. Dozens of characters and wonderful descriptions - especially in the passing of seasons add to the richness"

" I bought this book--a small-town mystery and message of morality--because Jodi Picoult, one of my favorite authors, said Alice Hoffman is one of her greatest inspirations. "The River King" being my introduction to Alice Hoffman, I found the plot disappointing. It lack the twists and turns I've come to expect with Picoult's books. Perhaps the story is a bit too predictable? It starts slow and gets more interesting about halfway through but by the end I was underwhelmed. I like Hoffman's style enough, and characters Carlin and Gus are certainly memorable, so I am looking forward to reading of one of her other books .. perhaps Practical Magic or Here on Earth. "

" This book was sad and disturbing at many levels. Many of the characters were repulsive at best. However, I think that is exactly was the author wanted readers to feel. If you're looking for a feel good book with everything neatly tied up at the end, then this is not the book for you. However it is a book that will make you think about people and rouse up some feelings for justice to be served. It is preciously these feeling that made this a good read for me.I would give it a 3.5 stars. " Just finished this, it was very engrossing and a pretty quick read for me. It's a bit of murder mystery, a bit love story, a quite a bit of small town gossip and character development. It was a bit shallow at times and predictable which I don't really like even though it was entertaining. "
