In Jennifer L. Holm's New York Times bestselling, Newbery Honor winning middle grade historical fiction novel, life isn't like the movies. But then again, 11-year-old Turtle is no Shirley Temple
She's smart and tough and has seen enough of the world not to expect a Hollywood ending. After all, it's 1935 and jobs and money and sometimes even dreams are scarce. So when Turtle's mama gets a job housekeeping for a lady who doesn't like kids, Turtle says goodbye without a tear and heads off to Key West, Florida to live with relatives she's never met. Florida's like nothing Turtle's ever seen before though. It's hot and strange, full of rag tag boy cousins, family secrets, scams, and even buried pirate treasure! Before she knows what's happened, Turtle finds herself coming out of the shell she's spent her life building, and as she does, her world opens up in the most unexpected ways. Filled with adventure, humor and heart, Turtle in Paradise is an instant classic both boys and girls with love.
Includes an Author's Note with photographs and further background on the Great Depression, as well as additional resources and websites.

"Turtle's mother takes a new housekeeper job but the boss doesn't allow children. So Turtle is dropped off at her aunt's house in the Florida Keys. Her mother doesn't even confirm that the letter reached the aunt (it didn't) Turtle takes us on an adventures with her gang of boy cousins and afternoons with her grandma (who isn't dead after all). Loved Turtle's spunk and the depiction of depression life in the Keys. Wish that her father's identity was more of a surprise. Left me wanting to read more."

— Jayla, 10/9/2019" turtle in paradise was a great book I loved how the author showed the characters feelings but did not tell. I also love how you feel like youre really there when you read it and how you can connect with turtle. "
— Emma, 1/30/2014" A cute historical fiction about Key West during the Great Depression. Likable characters, adventure, probably more of a girl book. "
— Elisabeth, 1/22/2014" Battle of the Books: During the depression in Key West before tourism, told by Turtle, a young spunky girl is sent to live with her aunt and a world she doesn't know at all. Loved that story was based on the author's family and island history...including Papa Hemingway himself... "
— Kari, 1/9/2014" Turtle is a sassy character and was fun to read about. I think my 6th graders will enjoy this book even with the references to earlier times-maybe especially with those references. The dry humor is outstanding. "

— Lizzie, 11/12/2013" I really enjoyed this family story set in Key West during the Great Depression. Holm included tons of true elements from archives and her own family history that really added flavor to the story. I liked the variety in the characters and the fact that there was not a neatly wrapped ending. This one is going on my Newbery list. "
