One of the true classics of American literature, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has stirred the imagination of young and old alike for over four generations. Originally published in 1900, it was the first truly American fairy tale, as Baum crafted a wonderful out of such familiar items as a cornfield scarecrow, a mechanical woodman, and a humbug wizard who used old-fashioned hokum to express that universal theme, “There’s no place like home.”

Follow the adventures of young Dorothy Gale and her dog, Toto, as their Kansas house is swept away by a cyclone and they find themselves in a strange land called Oz. Here she meets the Munchkins and joins the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion on an unforgettable journey to the Emerald City, home of the all-powerful Wizard of Oz.

" Finally started to read the Oz series. I've watched the movie since I was a little girl, and wanted to see what the books are like. This first one is quite different from the movie in places, but still pretty good. I liked it enough to want to continue on with the series (I'm reading them on my kindle). "

" I've read this before, a long time ago, and I wasn't disappointed by my re-read. This book truly is a classic. It is easy to read (it was written for children after all) and can be finished in almost one sitting. What I REALLY loved was the forward for this particular edition. It has some great insights into the story and was VERY well written. "

" My 10 year old LOVED this book also. She even did a big diorama on the story. She was very interested in the differences between the book and story. She really liked the story of the tin woodsman. I think I might pick it up. "

" I've watched the original movie so many times since childhood and I was really excited to finally pick up the book. There were many differences between book vs. movie. One major difference is that the movie made it seem like Oz was just a dream. In the book - Oz is real! Dorothy's house really did land in Oz and all of her adventures really did happen. The characters in Oz did not resemble her family members back home. The story was fantastic! The world building was awesome! I went to see the most recent movie "Oz the Great and Powerful" last week. I loved that they included many aspects of the book in that movie. The Oz that I pictured while reading the book is pretty much the Oz that was depicted in the movie. Right down to the little china town :) I liked this book a whole lot and I will probably read the rest of the series eventually. "

" Allegory for the gold standard, and populism in the 1890s! I recommend reading a historical companion alongside this for added entertainment and background. "

" Whenever the Wizard of Oz movie would be on TV my mother would always comment, "You should read the book. It's better than the movie." She was correct in making this statement. I found the story interesting and entertaining. A very nice read for anyone interested in fantasy. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Charla Oppenlander | 1/28/2014

" I read this one out loud to Scot. We both really liked it! I had no idea how much different the movie is from the original book and that there are sequels to the book. We are going to try to find the second in the series to read. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Tara | 1/28/2014

" I gave this book 3 stars mostly because of the redundancy of the writing. It reminded me of a simple Dr. Seuess book but with a longer and more twisted plot. It would have been more enjoyable if it were a lot shorter. With that said, I liked the book more than the movie only because it included so much more. I did LOVE the movie however. It was neat reading all the differences from book to movie like the ruby red slippers were originally silver, the Tin Woodman liked to chop the heads off things that got in his way (that definitely should've been included in the movie!) and the tale behind the winged monkies. I should've read this a long time ago. I wasn't even aware that there was a whole series. "

" Beautifully done and very thorough. Hearn is a little biased in his love of all things Oz at some points, but his scholarship still shines through. Fascinating for anyone who likes this book. "

" This book will be a reminder to the things we don't oftenly see and appreciate. And that, there's no such thing as coincidence, everything happens for a reason. 20 years from now I will surely read this book again. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Julie | 1/14/2014

" What a weird little book. It reads almost as though it were an outline. I'm impressed that someone with such vision came along and made this story into the famous movie that so greatly impacted our popular culture. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Melissa Carlos | 1/13/2014

" De -niet zo heel coherente- avonturen van een meisje uit Kansas in een wonderlijk land vol kleine mensen, heksen en een bedriegelijke tovenaar. Met de legendarische bijfiguren the Scarecrow, the Tin woodman en the cowardly lion. Nog steeds ontzettend leesbaar. "

" As long as it's a very simple story, and beside the fact that I had read and heard some adaptations of it as a child (I even played a videogame about this book!), it was definetely nice to read the original story. "

" I first read this as a child and have read it again a couple of times over the years. Baum gave us such a wonderful world of fantasy and some life lessons and has inspired others to continue the tale from their own life perspectives (think Wicked). "

" Some differences from the iconic movie. I haven't decided how I feel about them yet. It was shorter than I expected. It differs from Wicked in that Glinda is witch of the South... which is pretty important to Wicked. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Meghan Kitz | 7/3/2013

" This wasn't too bad of a story, but I think I will continue to point people to C.S. Lewis's Narnia books if they want some classic fantasy from the chapter book section. All the best parts of this book made it into the movie, which was better overall in my opinion. "

" Brilliant, just as every single other L. Frank Baum masterpiece is. Perfect for any age, it nurtures and encourages the imagination and is not condescending of magic or children, one trait that is vastly important and means that L. Frank Baum's Oz stories still stand through the test of time. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Renee Weed | 2/14/2013

" As much as I love the Oz series as a whole, this is not my favorite. I love it, but prefer some of the later books (The Patchwork Girl of OZ or Glenda of Oz). Obviously you should start at the beginning, but please do not stop there. The entire series deserves a read! "

" This was the first book that gave me an inclination that the life of grown-ups was sad. Aunt Em would clutch her heart when Dorothy laughed and wondered how the child could find anything to laugh at in that bleak barren place. Why Dorothy ever wanted to go home eludes me. "

" L. Frank Baum's preface warns about the absence of a morality tale in the pages of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and certainly those accustomed to the Hollywood version will find this tale darker, deeper, and less predictable. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Ginger | 1/9/2013
