"It's by Phillip Pullman so it can't be bad. This was a fast interesting read. The ending went exactly where the opening line told you it would, all while building believable and likeable characters. Simply one of the best story-tellers out there, even though this particular story was a little thin."

" This book lacked the rich writing style and imagery, as well as the gripping plot of the His Dark Materials series which I so enjoyed. I was pretty disappointed in this book. "

" Compared to Pullman's other works, this novel is weak and lacked character depth. The characters didn't grow on me and I didn't feel much empathy for them during the sad moments. The plot didn't engage me and it felt rather flat. The climax of the story was predictable and I was disappointed by the lack of creativity with this story. "

" Another book by Philip Pullman whose genre doesn't particularly interest me, but whose story is so well-written I didn't mind reading it. The main character, Chris, is surprisingly likable. You have all these boys who may seem tough and obnoxious on the outside, but when you really think about it they're just kids. I empathize with him. Somewhat. "

" I love Pullman's "His Dark Materials," and I really didn't know what to expect from this book. I read it in one sitting and loved it. Heartbreaking. "

" This book struck me, ultimately, as convoluted and just sort of ugly. Though I liked the main female character, and her story was at least somewhat engaging, the primary character was just kind of bland. I appreciate a novel that dares to have an unhappy ending, but this one felt more cynical than poignant. "

" The White Mercedes is a slowly unwinding suspense/mystery for young adults. While the plot holes and the brooding pace may frustrate some readers, it's a dark and bleak sort of noir novel that kept me very captivated up until the end. It reminded me very much of a Coen Brothers movie in its mood. Recommended for older teens (there are definitely some more mature parts to this book than one might expect) who prefer the dark and twisted to happily ever after. "

" Capturing feelings that are both dark and morally questionable and combined this with a uncompromising climax, this book is a emotional time bomb. "

" A very thrilling read and very hard to put down. The pace of the story is fast, which is good in some ways, but bad in others because it felt like the story was over too quickly. It was definitely a good plot-line though, and touched on a few issues Pullman talks about in His Dark Materials regarding innocence, and the getting of wisdom. Overall, an enjoyable read but not life-changing. "

" Philip Pullman is an amazingly good writer, i think the only reason this story didn't grab me is because it is written in modern times; and time in modern has forfeited romance and mystery. it's just not there. "

" Philip Pullman writes really adult books under the guise of YA books. This one is one of them. It has sex and violence, and love, and is very dark. I really like it, though nowhere near as good as his His Dark Materials trilogy. Still, a quick, good read with a great ending. "
