"I'm generally a Pullman fan so I'm going into this with a bias but I thought his descriptions of Victorian London were fantastic. Good story and excellent characters. I generally don't like mysteries but this was just a good strong and entertaining story."

" Sally, a 16 year old orphan, is investigating the murder/drowning of her father. The trail takes her to many places in Victiorian London and she meets many different people. She encounters drug dens, guns, and ruthless people. A lot for her to deal with in such a short novel. Well told and a satistfying ending. "
— Donna, 2/3/2014" I was drawn to this first book of the Sally Lockhart Trilogy because I enjoyed Pullman's His Dark Materials Trilogy so much. The Ruby in the Smoke is much less fantastical with its feet firmly planted on the ground. Which for me was kind of disappointing. The story is set in the late 19th Century London around a young teenage girl whose father mysteriously dies in the Asia Pacific region. She quickly finds that her life is wound up in a prized ruby many people are after - and her life is quickly in danger. Putting aside my expectations the book is pretty good for a Young Adult story - and is quite dark (always a pleasure for me). "
— Wils, 1/14/2014" i read this trilogy approximately 7.5 million times when i was younger. so good. and it taught me all i know about opium use. no kidding. "
— Chrissie, 12/31/2013" Gripping. And a very good reader. We listened to it on a trip to Oregon---and the time flew by! "
— Lia, 12/26/2013" Sally Lockhart is one of my favorite female heroines. "
— Maggie, 12/24/2013" Good stuff right here. Pullman is awesome. "
— Tobi, 12/17/2013" An easy and entertaining read! "
— Jennifer, 12/2/2013" This book was almost four stars. I really enjoyed it, but it surprised me in a few weird ways. It was written with the simplicity and plot structure of a YA book, but then adult things would happen. I kept on getting surprised when guns and opium showed up. "
— izikavazo, 11/28/2013" Very enjoyable tale with a nice twist at the end "
— Cathy, 11/24/2013" The first half of the book was bearable, but then it got confusing and the choices that the characters made seemed random. "
— Erika, 10/15/2013" very good. among my favorite stories to read. "
— Gheeta, 9/25/2013" Clearly I love Philip Pullman books. He doesn't make every thing simple, the characters always have to figure themselves out. This is especially true in this book. "
— Jill, 7/19/2013" Meh. I expect more from Pullman. I may read the next just to find out if the story will every go somewhere interesting. More likely not. "
— Miramira, 3/25/2013" Mystery/adventures featuring an independent, smart girl in the 1890s in England. There's a trilogy. The first one was made into a movie by the BBC. The movie was okay, but I loved the series of books. "
— Suzette, 1/6/2013" The first Sally Lockhart mystery. Like Nancy Drew only even better (in a way) because it takes place in Victorian England. Recommended by Joe Pickett, this book did not disappoint. "
— Ann-Marie, 6/17/2012" The Sally Lockheart mysteries are really well done. This is the first and one of my favorites. I wish Philip Pullman would write more of these. I think they are better in many ways than His Dark Materials, but what do I know. "
— Celeste, 7/7/2011" doesn't even compare to his dark materials trilogy "
— Amanda, 5/22/2011" A fast-paced Victorian mystery (with a female protagonist), written by the 'His Dark Materials' creator. "
— mstan, 4/14/2011" Sally Lockhart receives a strange anonymous letter shortly after her father drowns at sea telling her to beware the 7 blessings, Sally is plunged into mystery trying to find out what really happened to her father. "
— Dizzy, 4/10/2011" This was a wonderful mystery and amazin adventure which i was immediatley drawn into "
