"Yay for history, the plight of women, Jews, and socialism! I liked the social commentary in this book more than the plot itself, which was kind of convoluted and frustratingly obvious. Time to shelve this trilogy for another several years before revisiting it again."

" Good finish to the series. Could have used a bit of editing though. "
— Grace, 2/20/2014" A bit preachy at the end (particularly with the Dan Goldberg character, righteous socialist journalist etc) but a quality yarn nonetheless from Pullman. This is the third in the Sally Lockhart series though, and I hadn't read the previous two, so I admit that I came into the series all wrong. "
— J.T., 2/19/2014" Brilliant! Interesting, fun, exciting. It is a really good book for everyone, the young and the less so. "
— Susanna, 2/8/2014" Having recently finished the first two books, this felt heavy handed and predictable. The "issues" outweighed the plot, also felt preachy at times. "
— Emese, 1/30/2014" Hope there are more of Sally Lockheart! Great books! "
— Dan, 1/30/2014" Lovely, lovely little book. A satifying end to a well written, page turning, historical fiction mystery series. "
— Maria, 1/23/2014" Pullman wows again. I think I prefer these books to the Dark Materials series on the whole. "
— Kit, 1/21/2014" Good stuff! Love Pullman's take on Victorian England's habits, norms, & quirks. I am fond of his understanding of social hierarchies of gender, religion, and culture. Pullman has an eye for social nuance! "
— Darshan, 1/19/2014" I think it would be enjoyable to re-read, looking for all the little details and clues, and character development. "
— Alyn, 1/18/2014" If you want to have your character do a lot of really stupid things, please don't perpetually describe her as intelligent. "
— Lindsay, 9/20/2013" I have enjoyed this series a lot, perhaps more than His Dark Materials. The characters are liekable and the plot is intriguing. I also think that the time period description is fairly realistic and I would definitely be encouraged to read more by Philip Pullman. "
— Bethany, 10/4/2012" I couldn't put it down. . . "
— Shawna, 8/15/2012" Should come with a donation envelope to Equality Now and a coupon for a free kickboxing lesson, as you'll have some pent-up anger to work out by the end... "
— Kim, 7/12/2012" This one went a bit long in places. Otherwise really fun reading, a great adventure with an excellent, strong, fun female protagonist. "
— Shannah, 4/13/2012" Good and intruiging, a good young adult mystery novel. "
— Cecelia, 3/14/2012" This is one of the best of the Sally Lockhart books, although when teh "bad guy" is revelaed it is not really a surprise. "
— Daniel, 8/19/2011" I loved this book. It is meant for young adults but it felt very grown up to me. Great detail I felt like I was learning all the way through the book about life, politics, London you name it. "
— Shawn, 5/17/2011" I read this many years ago and was glad when I finally got my own job that I could buy the books I loved. This was one of the first I purchased - I enjoy it that much! The whole series! "
— Corinne, 4/22/2011" Yes! Totally great. Awesome, ridiculous plot. Jewish socialists + victorian feminists + so much more. "
— Sarah, 3/27/2011" I couldn't put it down. . . "
— Shawna, 1/23/2011" More Victorian drama featuring a marvellous cast of characters. "
— Coren, 12/11/2010" Enjoyed this series very much the first time I read it, still enjoying it a whole lot on re read. I like Sally, and I also really like the way this series tips its hat to its Victorian antecedents in interesting sorts of ways. "
— BunWat, 12/1/2010" Wonderful series with a humanizing depection of the UK and the world in the 1880s "
— Bcoghill, 10/28/2010" read it in high school, but i still remember some of it. good book. "
— Jennifer, 9/25/2010" what a great ending to the trilogy. socialism, social justice, passionate love and sewage. what more could i want? "
— Alisa, 9/13/2010" I like the first sentence of the goodreads summary: "A terrifying thriller set in Victorian London." This is definitely not a children's book, and I have no idea why the library didn't have it in the adult fiction section where it belongs. "
