Publisher Description

In The Wee Free Men, by Terry Pratchett, a nightmarish danger threatens from the other side of reality. Armed with only a frying pan and her common sense, young witch-to-be Tiffany Aching must defend her home against the monsters of Fairyland. Luckily she has some very unusual help: The local Nac Mac Feegle - aka the Wee Free Men - a clan of fierce, sheep-stealing, sword-wielding, six-inch-high blue men. Together they must face headless horsemen, ferocious grimhounds, terrifying dreams come true, and ultimately the sinister Queen of the Elves herself.

"Stephen Briggs gives the best audiobook reading I've heard, complete with distinctive, wonderful voices for every character and a playful narration. The book itself is classic Pratchett, but tuned for kids. He doesn't pull punches with his storytelling and some of his descriptions are as deliciously creepy as they are inventive. In Tiffany Aching, he has created a heroine that I know my 9-year-old self could have easily related to. An absolute delight, from the first word to the last. The audiobook is 7+ hours long, and I listened to the whole damn thing yesterday."

" Although it's a children's book, it's some of Pratchett's best (as in most enjoyable) work. The Nac Mac Feegles are straight out hilarious. Like a bunch of moronic dwarven berserkers gone Braveheart. ^^ "

" I love love love the rest of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. They were hilarious and made me laugh, and the characters managed to be uproariously comical yet at the same time serious and diverse. This book, though of the same universe, did not measure up. I suppose it was supposed to be a "young adult" novel, though the idea of having the protagonist be nine years old absolutely flummoxed me. She acted more like she was 12 or 14, indeed, I would have identified with her more if she was. That still does not excuse ex deus machina or miraculous last minute strength summoning or strange, idealistic interpretations of magic that had even this avid fantasy reader scratching her head. I'm not flaying this book, no no, I did after all give it three stars. But I won't be reading the second, unless I grow extremely bored and have no other options. "

" Love this book! Tiffany is the perfect protagonist in my opinion. She is brave and willing to face her fears, even when she has doubts about herself. That takes real courage, and that is something that we all need to find for ourselves. The pictsies are wonderful! They are the perfect companions that provide all the comic relief that you could ask for. "
